Hadrian Helping Hands
Volunteer at Hadrian School
A little time can make a big difference. Whether you can help every week, lend a professional skill for one project, join a group volunteer day, or simply help us source useful materials, we would love to hear from you.
You do not need to do everything. Choose the type of help that suits your time, skills and confidence. We will match you with an appropriate role and make sure you know exactly what is expected before you begin.
What happens after you get in touch?
- Tell us a little about yourself, your availability and the kind of help you are interested in.
- We match you with a suitable role or project and confirm the named person you will report to.
- We complete the checks required for that role. This may include safeguarding and DBS checks.
- You receive a short induction, any task-specific training and the information you need to work safely.
- We agree when you will volunteer and what you will be doing. You will never be expected to take on a task you are not comfortable or qualified to do.
Your safety and our children’s safety come first
Some volunteer roles are simple and low risk. Others involve children, tools, equipment, chemicals, food, water-based activities or specialist work. We manage each role according to what it involves. You may be asked to complete specific checks or training before starting a role, and some tasks can only be carried out by suitably competent or qualified people.
Training opportunities
Depending on your role and availability, training may include:
- Rebound and Hydro support
- Moving and Handling
- Food Hygiene for Tommy’s Café
- Massage
- Relevant HEADS training
- Selected school CPD where appropriate
Volunteering at Hadrian School – Class Roles and helping in our new Café
Thanks for your interest in volunteering at Hadrian School. With the school growing so fast and now having 19 classes and 170 children it’s very busy every day.
Café VolunteersÂ
Hadrian School are looking for volunteers to assist with the running of our new Café Development (Tommy’s Café). As part of our ‘Dream Big Project’ which involves building a new Hydrotherapy Pool and a Disability Community Resource we have built a Cafe’ in memory of one of our much-loved Governors Tommy Thompson.

As it’s a new venture for us we are still finding our feet in terns of what support we may need, what days, and what the exact activities the volunteers will be involved in, but we would like volunteers to consider helping us with the following:
- Assisting in preparing simple food items such as sandwiches, cakes, (Online Food Hygiene Training will be given)
- Helping to take orders/serve customers
- Helping to stock items such as drinks, confectionery
- Helping to clean the café down after any days where business takes place
- Working with the children on their preparation for life activities (This will involve working with children around the food technology curriculum, cooking with them)

Class based roles:
We are looking for volunteers to help in school on a regular basis across all year groups to assist with activities such as swimming, working on the trampolines delivering therapies, assisting in the classroom, helping to supervise children playing outside, arts and crafts, school trips and lots of other activities.
If you could commit to a regular day/time each week this would be so helpful to the classes. It’s important that volunteers are committed to coming into school, as the Teachers will plan activities on the basis that there will be volunteers in class.
If you could spare a day or half day or even more time in your week to help in school we would be very grateful.
The kind of activities you could be involved in are:
- Supporting PE, Trampoline, Hydrotherapy or swimming groups
- Supervising painting or ‘messy’ play activities and clearing up
- Working with table top activities, puzzles, matching games and computer work
- Reading stories or supervising play activities
- Dance or Drama sessions
- Supporting feeding programmes at lunch times or supervising in the playground
- Accompanying minibus outings and community based learning
- Preparing materials and resources
- Helping children with their independence by going on trips to Café or in the community
Please note: if you are not able or don’t wish to take part in the more physical aspects this is not an issue as you can help supervise on the pool side etc. but it is an important element of the role in most classes to be physically fit.
