Wibble wobble, jelly frogs and snakes!

By Phil Cookson1st October 2021

This week we have enjoyed more sensory experiences. We were very excited to see what was inside the big box – strawberry jelly with frogs and snakes! We used our nose to smell the strawberry jelly as the lid came off, we used our hands to feel the jelly squash through our fingers as we grabbed the snakes and frogs, and of course we had to use our tongue to have a taste! Yummy!

We also enjoyed a sensory communication group trying different tastes and smells. We used vocalisations and gestures to tell our teachers if we liked it or not, the honey was our favourite!

Hadrian Olympics 2021! Go Team Greece!!

8th July 2021Phil Cookson

Wow! What a week of fun! This week we have participated in our first ever Hadrian Olympics. Our class was Team Greece. After the Opening Ceremony on Monday where each country took to the stage with their flags and torches, we have spent the entire week trying out new sports.

We have tried out Crazy Golf, Dance and Cheerleading, Karate, Running, Jabadao, obstacle courses, gymnastics and finished off with a relaxing Yoga session in the Yurt. The children have put 100% into each activity and have really impressed us with their new skills. We have had a fun, exciting week and we are ready to finish off with our closing ceremony outside tomorrow morning.

UP…UP.. AND AWAYYYY!

28th June 2021Phil Cookson

Last week we continued our lovely summer holiday theme in class and took a trip to the Hadrian airport. We followed step by step instructions and decorated our very own paper airplanes which we then flew down our Hadrian Airways runway. The children loved competing against each other seeing who could fly their planes the furthest!

We jetted off on our airplanes and landed in the sunny country of Greece! We first stopped to have an ice-cream on our blankets with the scenic view of sand and sea! The Children loved choosing their flavour of ice-cream and toppings of a wafer and strawberry sauce, YUM! Then we explored the beautiful warm sand and made lots of sandcastles before taking a dip in the sea to cool off.

We’re all going on a summer holiday…

18th June 2021Phil Cookson

Another lovely week of learning all about holidays and the seaside. The children particularly enjoyed listening to a sensory story about a trip to the seaside, they worked incredibly hard to listen, turn take and explore the different props. A firm favourite was definitely the sweet bag at the end of the story!

We then decided to take a little mid-week vacation on Hadrian Airways to somewhere lovely and sunny… But first we had to make sure that all passengers had their passports! We had a little think about what we needed to put in our passports and make sure they were all complete before we boarded the plane. Everyone was so excited to climb aboard and get some inflight snacks and entertainment. We will definitely have to have another vacation before the end of term!

Happy weekend!

The sun has got his hat on!

11th June 2021Phil Cookson

The sun has got his hat on hip-hip-hip hooray, the sun has got his hat on and he’s coming out to play!

What a lovely week, beautiful sunshine and fantastic hard work from all the children in class. A fabulous start to the run up to the end of the school year. We have been super busy this week, we started a new topic which is all about holidays and the seaside. The children have fully embraced the beautiful weather and loved exploring the sand and water outdoors. We had a full morning of water exploration on Wednesday, which went down a hoot.

Nell turned the big 7 on Thursday, we had a lovely party in class full of music, games, fun and special snacks. The children loved Nell’s birthday cake which she brought in to share. It was all round good fun for everyone. Happy birthday Nell!

Kian is being awarded the weekly achievers certificate in assembly today for his excellent participation, interacting and communication throughout the week and especially during our water exploration morning. Well done Kian!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

I can do it, I will do it!

28th May 2021Phil Cookson

Over the last half term we have been working really hard in PSHCE on self-help independence skills. The children have been learning and practicing lots of vital skills everyday including putting on their coats, washing their hands effectively, brushing their teeth, lining up to move around the school, brushing their hair and putting on their own socks and shoes. We will also continue to practice these life skills moving in to the final stretch of the school year.

We hope you have a lovely week off and look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 7th June.

Ahoy, Me Hearties!

21st May 2021Phil Cookson

Ahoy there, huge apologies for neglecting our blog last term. We promise to keep you more up to date with what our wonderful children in class have been busy getting up to and to continue showing you their fantastic work next half term. We are so happy to have everyone back in school, safe and well after a very uncertain few months. We have recently welcomed two new friends in class, Holly and Nell. They have both settled in really well and we are so happy and excited to see both of them Thrive this term.

We thought we would share with you what we have been doing this past half term. Our topic is Pirates! The children have really thrown themselves in to the topic and enjoyed lots of experiences including role playing pirates in Drama, creating their very own pirates, ships, parrots and treasure maps in Art, reading the story ‘Pirates love underpants’ in English as well as washing and hanging up the pirates smelly underpants!

The photos speak for themselves on how hard the children have worked and how much fun they have had. We hope you enjoy looking through them.

Hello December

3rd December 2020Phil Cookson

Wow, how can it be December already? We have jumped straight in with all things Christmassy. We are reading the story ‘Santa’s 12 days of Christmas’ by Alexandra Robinson in class and each day something wonderfully Christmassy happens in the book and in class too!

We arrived in class on Tuesday morning to find our classroom had been decorated, and not one but TWO Christmas trees had been delivered and decorated. We also noticed that a cheeky little elf was sitting in one of the trees on the Gruffalo display. He’s back again this year to make lots of mischief! He has been moving around the classroom throughout the week and hiding in some very silly places, we have been keeping our eyes peeled to see where he is each day.

We then enjoyed the advent assembly and the big switch on of all the lovely Christmas lights around school followed by making some glittery Christmas party hats and finishing the day with a yuletide ball. On Wednesday we made some delicious Christmas gingerbread biscuits and decorated them which were then enjoyed for snack in the afternoon. Today we have been learning all about the Christmas story and have been retelling parts of the story and even had a go at sequencing the whole story ourselves. This afternoon we have had the most wonderful time singing Christmas songs outside with Tracey’s class. We have enjoyed wrapping up with blankets and drinking hot chocolate to keep us warm.

The first week of Christmas countdown has been so magical and the class have worked extremely hard at such an exciting time. Look out for lots more exciting things happening in the next couple of weeks.

There’s no such thing as a Gruffalo…

19th November 2020Phil Cookson

Sorry we haven’t posted for a couple of weeks. The past three weeks we have been really getting into our new story for the half term which is ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson.

‘He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws. He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose. His eyes are orange, his tongue is black, and he has purple prickles all over his back.’

We have been thinking about the characters and learning about the journey the little mouse goes on throughout the story.

In PE we have been using different movements for each character in the story and moving around the hall depending on who we are to create some excellent dances. In Art and DT we have been making character puppets and a Gruffalo house, which we have then used to retell parts of the story and create shadow puppets with. We have also made a fantastic Gruffalo display in class which we will take a photo of and upload soon.

We made some yummy purple prickled pancakes and a Gruffalo mud pie in cooking. We have also enjoyed going on Gruffalo trails around school using clues to find the different characters and Gruffalo body parts.

The children have worked incredibly hard over the last few weeks and we are so proud of every single one of them.
