For several weeks we have been working on an Outdoor Art Sculpture based loosely on the work of Jane Ackroyd. We decided to work with metal as it is going to be displayed outside in the Caterpillar Garden. We collected lots of metal pots and pans with the help of our wonderful parents and carers and also cutlery. (we had a great time making music with the objects before we started)

Next we set to work making our structure. We used the old gardening frame as a basis for our sculpture and then using two colours of metal paint we painted the items. It was wonderful to see how the children used the paint creatively to decorate the pots and pans. We also painted the frame using the same paint.

We then attempted to attach the cutlery and other flat metal  objects to the outside of the  frame using grout which was great to work with but we found it just wasn’t strong enough and once dry, they all dropped off! We had to resort to good old Gorilla Glue (other glues are available!) which obviously the adults did for fear of gluing children’s fingers to the display!!!!

We then worked on attaching the cutlery to the inside of the frame using wire. This was super tricky but we were delighted with the children’s persistence and determination. Then all we needed to do was to pile the pots and pans up at the bottom and ta da! finished.

We also added a couple of ladybirds! Well why not?

We named the piece “Picnic” and Leni did a wonderful job of painting the name on a piece of wood using the metal paint. We are so proud of the piece which currently stands in the corridor. We have had so many “likes” as people have walked past it and commented on how good it is. It will move it shortly to the Caterpillar Garden where we are waiting for better weather to have The Outdoor Art Exhibition.

Very well done to our fabulous group of children.
