Sculpting young minds.

8th January 2021Simon Hall

Welcome back everybody.

Even though this week has been a bit shorter than normal we have still been able to fit plenty of things in. Our children have all done a wonderful job working on their maths & English targets. We have also started two new topics this week. The first of which is ‘where does food come from?’ We spent lots of time discussing our favourite foods and where they come from… such as apples being from the U.K & mangoes being from India.

Our second new topic was the artist Antony Gormley, who makes sculptures in the shape of people. We had a look at pictures of various sculptures that he has made as we had a go at making our own people shaped creations. Initially with some card in different shapes, before moving onto using cubes. Charlie D even made a version of the angel of the north using his cubes.

We would like to say a big well done to Charlie D for super work in our new ‘Sculptures’ topic in art. Charlie listened really well in the lesson and could tell us that he liked the Angel of the North sculpture and why. He worked brilliantly during the independent task to create a 2D shape sculpture with a human form. Afterwards, he continued to work on sculpture during choice time, making an amazing Angel of North sculpture using multilink cubes. Well done Charlie!

We hope that you all have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you next week.

We Like to Party!

18th December 2020Simon Hall

We have had a very Christmassy week in Antonia’s class this week.
We made gingerbread on Wednesday, which was very sticky but very fun. We had our Christmas lunch on Thursday which was lovely and tasty. The children loved pulling their crackers.

We also had a wonderful time at our Christmas party this afternoon. We played lots of games and we even had the chance to meet Santa.

We would also like to say a big well done to Kaleb who earned our certificate this week. He earned this for working so hard at everything over the last few weeks. Kaleb has been working hard on his writing and his letter formations are coming along great. He has also been working hard on his maths and is able to add and subtract 2 numbers together when the answer lies under 30. He can even do the addition sums in his head!. Well done Kaleb.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Babka!

11th December 2020Simon Hall

Hello everyone.

This Wednesday we made our interpretation of babka is cookery. Babka is a dish that is often made during Hanukkah. Our version used bananas & chocolate in order to make a cake. The children all worked very well as a team and thoroughly enjoyed trying this dish. We all look forward to our Hanukkah party this afternoon.

We would also like to say a big well done to Joe who earned our certificate this week. He earned this by having such a good day on Thursday. He was kind to his friends on the bus on the way to school, he listened really well throughout the day and he was incredibly focused during our junk modelling session. Well done Joe!

We hope that you all have a lovely weekend!

Laughing so Hard it Yurts!

4th December 2020Simon Hall

Hello everyone!

This Thursday we had a wonderful day in the yurt. We started off the day with some bean bags and blankets & sat around the fire listening to a story. After this we played some games including ‘pass the smile’, ‘zoom… eek’ and a game called ‘teeth’ which involved trying to speak with our lips over our teeth. We then had our snack, which was the lovely leak & potato soup that we made in cookery that we heated up on the stove in the yurt. After snack we had lots of fun playing parachute games and we had another story in front of the fire before lunch.

After lunch we played some more fun filled games in the yurt. We played facial snap which involves 2 people covering their faces and after the count of 3 you both reveal your faces to show an emotion… if the emotions match you both shout “snap”. We also played a game called “Lets go… yes”. This involves one person saying “can you…” and saying an action or a mime such as “pretend to be an aeroplane”.  Then everybody has a go at the action. The children really tried hard at this game and were very imaginative. After this we all made hot chocolate and had a lovely warming snack. After that we all sat in a circle and the children took turns miming various things and they all did a fantastic job. We then had one more lovely story before returning home.

We would also like to say a big well done to Noura who earned our certificate this week. She was awarded this for being so confident in the yurt on Thursday. She joined in with everything, from games like ‘pass the smile’ & ‘lets go… yes’ to helping to make the hot chocolate during the afternoon. She even used her big voice when playing ‘zoom… eek’. Well done Noura!

We hope that you all have a lovely weekend.

Wok This Way!

27th November 2020Simon Hall

Hello everyone.

We have had another fun filled week this week. At the start of the week we did lots of hard work on our English & maths targets. On Wednesday we made a stir fry in a big wok. Everyone was surprised at how different each of the pieces of veg tasted after it was cooked.

On Thursday we had a very art filled day. We spent the morning doing junk modelling and making sculptures. We also went on a street art hunt around the caterpillar garden. We were very impressed with all of the different pieces of art that we found.

We would like to say a big well done to Charlie D for doing amazing work making a Christmas tree during our junk modelling session. Charlie chose what he wanted to make with no adult input and worked on it completely independently. He chose all of his own materials and was focused on the task for an extremely sustained period. Well done Charlie!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Keeping Fit with a Panathlon!

20th November 2020Simon Hall

Hello everyone!

We have had another very eventful week in our class. We have worked very hard on our English & maths outcomes. We made bread and butter pudding on Wednesday which went down very well. We spent some time playing in the leaves that have fallen during the autumn months & on Thursday we had a wonderful socially distanced multimedia pantomime.

One of the biggest things that we have done this week was the panathlon challenge. There were 4 activities that the children did and they all gave it their best and were wonderfully enthusiastic throughout. The activities were curling, moving around a slalom whilst balancing a bean bag on a tennis racket, throwing a ball at some cricket wickets & throwing some bean bags at some balls balancing on some cones.

We would like to say a big well done to Maria who earned our certificate this week. She earned this for her caring attitude & thoughtfulness. Maria has been a great friend to everyone, but she has been a particularly good friend to Kayden since he started at Hadrian School. She is always looking out for him, playing with him & showing us all what it means to be a good friend. Well done Maria.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you all next week.

Moto Skills Madness!

13th November 2020Simon Hall

Hello everyone.

We have had a very busy week this week. In addition to our usual activities we have learned about why we wear poppies on remembrance day and we have had a lovely day of Pudsey bear themed activities today.
On Thursday we had a whole morning of motor skills based activities. All of the children tried incredibly hard during this session. We started with some finger skills warm ups before moving on to a series of games. These games included stacking & arranging small cups, joining coloured dots without crossing the previously drawn lines, using play dough, using the pressing frogs and trying to get them to land in the tub, stretching elastic bands around a tube, moving a car with a pen tied to it around a track as well as over writing and copy writing activities.

On Wednesday morning the children made an ‘everything stew’. This is a stew that was made in war times that involved tomatoes, oxo cubes, cabbage, vegetarian mince (although during the war this would have been beef mince) and any vegetables that people had left over from other meals. This stew was made because it was quick, simple and it used all the left overs. Which was important during times of rationing. The children were all great at peeling and chopping the veg and they all really enjoyed trying it during snack time.

We would also like to say a big well done to Charlie L who earned our certificate this week. This was awarded to Charlie because he has been working so hard on his Maths and English learning outcomes this week. Charlie has really applied himself, especially when working on his number bonds to 10. He has been using numicon to create number sentences and could read them independently, always recognising the + & the = signs. Well done Charlie!

We hope that you all have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you all next week.

Autumn Fun!

6th November 2020Simon Hall

Welcome back everyone.

We have had a lovely first week back and have done lots of hard work… as well plenty of fun things. We have spent some time exploring the changes that autumn has on our playground, looking at all of the leaves that have fallen and the changes in colour.

During cookery this week we made some carrot cookies. These were often eaten during the way so they have few ingredients but they are delightfully tasty. The children really enjoyed making them… but they enjoyed eating them more.

We also had our first session of tag rugby this week. The children all tried very hard and did some great listening to all of the instructions given to them by our instructor Reece. We learned all about throwing and kicking the ball as well as how to take people’s tags and the importance of running from people who are after your tag.

We would like to say a big well done to Kaitlin who earned our certificate this week for working so hard on her learning outcomes for reading & writing this week. She has been working on ‘sh’ words. Kaitlin can now read lots of ‘sh’ words from sight without needing to sound them out and she has been beginning to write some ‘sh’ words by segmenting to spell. She also completed all of her work sheets that were sent home during our isolation. Well done Kaitlin.

We hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you all next week.

Charlie’s Cake

12th October 2020Simon Hall

On Friday afternoon during our wellbeing afternoon Charlie asked if he could make a chocolate cake for everyone. He put a lot of effort into it and with some help from his friends, especially Sophia, he made a lovely chocolate cake.

Well done Charlie!

There’s a Leek in the Building!

9th October 2020Simon Hall

Hello everyone.

This week has been a tad shorter than normal, but now that we are back we have been having a great time. We had a lovely time making a pottage (a type of medieval broth) with leeks, parsnips & onions. It went down very well and many children requested multiple extra bowls of it during snack time. We have also spent some time continuing to explore our topic of castles. The children were making their own castles out of lego and the big blocks. Some of them were very detailed… with gates, flags and battlements. Kaleb even decided that his castle needed an army of soldiers to protect it.

We would like to say a special shout out to Anthony who has earned our certificate this week for his castle. He was incredibly focused when making it, he thought carefully about the layout, he made a flag (which is tricky to do with lego), he added a drawbridge & even a gatehouse. Well done Anthony!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you all again next week.
