Teddy Bears Picnic

22nd May 2019Sharon Dodd

To finish off our topic of Teddy Bears Picnic we did just that – we made some sandwiches and Krispy cakes, got some pom bear crisps and the ice-cream that Paula very kindly bought for us and headed outside in the sunshine with our teddies for a picnic.

Cool Science!

17th May 2019Elaine Quinn

What a wonderful week we’ve had! We have really enjoyed our Science and DT week and have learned lots of new things.

We started our week with an assembly by the Cool Science Guy.  He made explosions, created bubbles filled with smoke, and he even set fire to Mr Rollings!  In the afternoon, the Cool Science Guy helped us to make slime, which we took home. It was loads of fun to touch the sticky stuff.

We have also enjoyed a trip to the Secret Garden for some bubble-making fun.  We were so enthusiastic about the bubble mixture that some of us needed a full change of clothes afterwards!

Some of us enjoyed the den-building activity in the Caterpillar Garden.  We had so much fun finding long branches and sticks to create a little camp. We all know how to survive in the wild, now!

Did you come to our science fair?  It was such fun to show off our exhibit.  Our experiment was based around making cars go fast by sending them down different slopes.  Did you have a go?  What did you find out?

We were sad not to win the Science Week Bake Off.  We made some lovely floral biscuits in a garden filled with edible soil which we thought was a surefire winner, but  well done to Phil’s class, who stormed into 1st place with a wonderful chocolate confection.

It’s been a fantastic week, full of exploration and fun.  We want it to be science and DT week every week! Have a great weekend, everyone.

Science Fair

17th May 2019Julia Kelly

Day four of our Science Week and we did some experiments of our own. We then went down to the sports hall where we took part in the Science Fair. Each class had to run a stall with a science experiment. The children took it in turns to walk around the fair and have a go at each experiment. We chose to work with static electricity. We all had a go at making tissues float in the air and seeing whose balloon it would go to. We also had empty cans and were able to move them with out touching the. We had so much fun.

In the afternoon half of us continued our work with the Bake-Off – it will not be a secret much longer! The other half of the children went to the Thrive Garden and planted some flowers.

Fire and Bubbles

16th May 2019Julia Kelly

Day three of Science and DT Week and lots more to explore. Some children were able to get involved in Fire Building in the Caterpillar Garden. Nick showed us what we needed to make a fire and indeed how to make sparks to start the fire. Other children went into the Sports Hall to explore the Star Lab. We started on our Bake- Off piece but we can’t tell you what is  going to be as it’s a highly guarded secret.

In the afternoon we all went into the Secret Garden to have lots of bubble fun. What another brilliant day. Tune in for more news tomorrow of our latest scientific adventures.

Art at the Baltic!

14th May 2019Julia Kelly

Today we went to the Baltic for a two hour Art Workshop with the artist, Natalie Frost. We explored a wide range of mediums including, paint in a salad spinner, dobber paints, melting crayons with hairdryers, black ink in pipettes, and a very soft moulding plasticine type material. It was wonderful to have the time and freedom to explore the different materials.

After we’d had lunch in a lovely airy room overlooking the Tyne River, we had some time exploring level 2 of the Baltic where we used construction materials, copied body shapes onto a screen, went into the library and explored the sensory room.

It was such a beautiful day that we went outside, each had an ice cream and then walked across the Millennium Bridge to see the sculpture known as “The Blacksmith’s Needle” We sang songs and also signed which was very much enjoyed by people walking past Nathan said next time we should have a hat to collect money!

What a busy but wonderful day.

Science and DT Week: Part 1

14th May 2019Rachael Budden

It is only Tuesday and we have already had SO much fun being scientists this week!  We experienced the Cool Science Guy in assembly on Monday who definitely lived up to his name, even going as far as to setting Mr. Rollings on fire (safely!)!  We also made boats for our competition in the hydropool later in the week and got messy by making slime- as you can imagine this went down very well with the children!  Today, some of us participated in a den building session and we have also been to the garden centre to buy seeds to plant tomorrow.  Hopefully we will have some lovely carrots and peas to eat soon!

We will keep you posted with pictures of our fun to come!

Science and DT Week – The Adventure Begins!

13th May 2019Julia Kelly

Today was the first day of a week of all things Science and DT. We had a wonderful introduction to the week thorough a Cool Science whole school Workshop. Two Professors introduced us to a range of different substances which when mixed together created amazing things.

When we came back to class we watched some experiments on the Smart Board which we are going to try and we also mixed our other materials together and made sensory bottles.

In the afternoon we made slime in the Cool Science workshop and also began designing and making boats for the boat race on Friday. What a busy first day. More to come every day.

Stop and Go! Fast and Slow!

10th May 2019Elaine Quinn

We have been extra busy this week, working on our transport topic.  We have been finding out all about different vehicles, and using our book, ‘Car, Car, Truck, Jeep’ to inspire our play and investigations.

On Tuesday we went for a walk around the local area.  We waved at people passing by on the buses, and looked for different types of vans and cars.  We looked at the bus timetables and thought about how people move around the busy city.  We practised using the zebra crossings, and used our eyes and ears to look and listen when we crossed the road.

We loved using the benches and A frames to investigate how we could make our cars go fast.  We discovered that the steeper we made the slope, the faster our cars went!  We were able to practise saying and signing some of our core vocabulary – stop and go, fast and slow! We are going to show off our experiment at the Science Fair, next week.

We loved using pictures of cars, buses and motorbikes to make traffic jams.  We counted out the different vehicles, then made patterns on our long paper ‘roads’.

We have also celebrated two birthdays this week!  Savanna had a lovely party and had a great time blowing out her candles.  What a lot of puff!  But Angela needed even bigger breaths to blow out the candles on her cake! Happy birthday to both of you!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Guess Who I Am

9th May 2019Julia Kelly

As part of our exploration of the artist Giacometti, we have been exploring different shapes we can make with our bodies to look just like Giacometti’s sculptures. In PE we used the white screen to make shadows of our favourite shapes to great effect. Later we looked at them on the big screen and tried to guess who they were. WE will re visit this again and produce a little show, just like the group Attraction who won Britain’s Got Talent.
