Class 2 Spring Term 1

17th February 2023Rachael Ford

Hi everyone 🙂 We have just been set up on the blogs and are really excited to show you some of the things that Class 2 have been doing this half term.  The Children have settled really well with their new Teacher Rachael and we are so proud of all they are achieving every day!

This half term our topic is Asia, the children have had a great time exploring Chinese themed Messy Play, exploring lots of lovely textures, colours, smells and tastes.

Our sensory story this half term had a Chinese New Year theme and they loved listening to Chinese music and dressing up in all the lovely coloured gowns and feeling the silk fabric of the tunics.

They have also created some lovely art for Chinese New Year with red and yellow paints around the Year of the Rabbit. The children in Class 2 thoroughly enjoyed using paint and exploring the colours and messy texture of the paint, brushes, sponges and rollers.  As well as paint, the children have done some fantastic mark making with chalks, pens and in other materials such as sand, glitter and even yoghurt this half term.

This half term we took part in Children’s Mental Health week, the theme this year was ‘Let’s Connect’ and was all about making connections.  We marked this by inviting parents into school for a Coffee afternoon and it was so lovely to get the opportunity to chat with parents and for them to spend some time in class with their children and their peers.

The Children had a wonderful time celebrating Valentine’s Day last week, we had a lovely sensory session with paints and lots of different paper, felt and card.  Class 2 loved exploring the different textures and tearing the paper.

The Children have continued to love their regular Hydrotherapy, Rebound, Jabadao, Thrive Room, Soft Play and Mud Kitchen sessions.  We have seen lots of wonderful progress during these sessions, particularly around communication and making relationships.

I hope you all have a great half term break with your wonderful children, I look forward to sharing more of their school adventures with regular blog posts after the break.

Rachael, Kira, Adam, Leighanne, James and Tracy 🙂

Sports Week!

8th July 2022Rachael Budden

This week we have had such fun participating in sports week, the sunshine even made an appearance! We are extremely proud as all the children have worked extremely hard at every activity and showed great sportsmanship.

We have participated in so many different activities this week. We started with week with mini golf, a firm favourite in our class! After all that excitement we finished off the morning with some relaxing yoga, then straight back to activities with football on the afternoon. We have some competitive children in our class that always comes out in a game of football!

Tuesday was full of activities. The day began with cricket where everyone took turns being the bowler and batter. We had some very enthusiastic children with great techniques! Following on from cricket, the children took part in orienteering with Alfie! Throughout the trail, the children participated in challenges to find Alfie’s favourite toys (with posters of Alfie modelling said toys!), including throwing his favourite ball, balancing tennis balls on rackets and even a dance to finish. As always, we spent out Tuesday afternoon swimming. Free sessions in the pool are always fun with the children showing off their skills.

Thursday, the last full day of sports week, was absolutely jam packed! We began the day with a boxing session. Our class love boxing and had been looking forward to this all week! Following a fun warm up, children were showed combinations, including punches, hooks, and uppercuts. They were so enthusiastic, one pupil was invited to stand at the front and lead an activity. The children then had the chance to demonstrate their moves on the pads. Following on from boxing, the children then rushed off to our next activity, dodgeball. The children practiced skills and got into teams for a game. The children’s competitive sides really came out, scoring extra points with the ‘powerballs’. We finished off the session with a game of foxes and chickens, with the chickens trying their best to get to the other side without them pesky foxes catching them out. After lunch we had a karate session. Using what we had already learnt in boxing from the morning, children got the chance to show off their punches, kicks and karate chops on the pads while learning the rules of the sport. As you can imagine, the children were absolutely exhausted following such a busy day of activities, so everyone got to enjoy an ice pop for snack.

Hello Everyone!

1st July 2022Rachael Budden

As we near the end of the school year, the children have been incredibly busy in preparation for all the upcoming events and changes. A huge focus this week has been on the transition from Hadrian to secondary school. We began looking at social stories around the transition. The children can fill their stories with information such as who their new teacher is, their classmates and what they can expect to do when they go to their new school. This will be ready for the children to take home before the transition. The children attending Sir Charles Parsons got the opportunity to visit the school, where they met their new teacher and were introduced to their new classmates. They got to experience lunch-time at the school and had time to socialise with their new friends. The children loved introducing themselves and getting stuck into the activities in their new classes.

Following last week’s science lesson on plants, the children had the opportunity to complete an experiment to see which conditions will affect the plants growth. The children used the knowledge they learnt in the previous lesson to predict whether the plant with or without water will grow the best. Now begins the anxious wait to see if they will sprout!

In Maths, we have continued identifying coins. Snack times have now turned into ‘tuck shop’ with the daily helper becoming our shop keeper. Each child shows great engagement throughout and are demonstrating they can correctly identify coins to ensure they can get their favourite snack.

This week we have continued with our preparations for our Hadrian School Carnival! The children handed out their invitations to the other classes. We then designed and began creating tie dye t-shirts to wear on the day. They turned out AMAZING and the children can’t wait to show them off.

In PE this week, we took a break from Samba dancing and had our own mini circuit training session. The children worked in two groups, one working on javelin throwing and the other on balance and coordination. The children loved showing off their skills on the balance boards and showed off funky moved while they completed the course.

Friday will be spend as always, celebrating the achievements of the lovely children in the school in Assembly, followed by Friday clubs where children can engage in their favourite activities with friends throughout the school.

Have a lovely weekend!

What a lovely week!

24th June 2022Rachael Budden

What a lovely week we have had to match the lovely weather. We took full advantage of all the glorious sunshine, enjoying extra playtimes, outdoor learning and even an ice pop or two!

This week, a huge focus has been preparing for our Hadrian Carnival, linking in with our topic of Brazil this term. After identifying features of an invitation in English last week, this week we made our own invitations to hand out ready ahead of the big day. We followed this up by making our carnival masks, using beautiful bright colours, flowers and feathers to make them stand out. We also had our next session on the steel pans, learning a brand new song which we can perform at the carnival. The children are loving being creative and making up their own tunes and funky beats.

Following the success of tuck shop snack time last week, we decided to incorporate Maths into our snack time again! The shopkeeper was responsible for checking the change and handing out snack, while the customers had the chance to practice identifying coins and got a tasty treat in the process.

In science, we began the session identifying the different parts of a plant. The children were able to identify parts such as the stem and roots. We then discussed what a plant needed to grow and what would happen if the plant did not receive all it needs. We were shown two plants and asked to identify which plant had not received sunlight and water. The children demonstrated a good understanding of why the plant did not thrive in its environment!

Following all of the glorious sunshine, PE this week was a little different. The children had a choice of enjoying a Samba lesson outside in the sunshine, or cosmic yoga indoors to cool down. Both went down a treat and were followed by a snack outdoors to finish the day!

We have spent our Friday celebrating the achievements of some wonderful children within the school in our second half term achievers assembly. It’s always a pleasure to see how well our friends are doing in their time at Hadrian. We will finish off the week with Friday social clubs and of course some choice time.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

What a lovely week!

17th June 2022Rachael Budden

We’ve had a great week in class (as well as outside the classroom thanks to the beautiful weather) this week. We started our week learning the features of an invitation. We are going to pair this with our posters, creating invitations for our Hadrian Carnival! We also began our new maths topic, money. We started with identifying money from 1p to £2. Once we could correctly identify the coins, we moved onto our very own tuck shop. The children were asked to identify the correct coins needed to ‘buy’ their juice and snack at snack time. We plan to make our tuck shop a more regular occurrence as the children found the activity fun and engaging, while showing us their ability to identify coins correctly.

Along with our posters and invitations, we spend our art lessons this week creating beautiful decorations for our Hadrian Carnival. We created tie dye art, decorative flowers and floral headbands. On the build up to the carnival we have so many great art projects to create, be prepared for a lot bright colours and feathers! We also had our second session with Jenny on the steel pan drums. We mastered two songs which we will be performing at our carnival.

Having a break from carnival preparations, we spent our next art lesson creating Father’s Day cards. The class took great pride in creating our cards! We finished the day with a PE lesson with Ellen’s class. We split into smaller groups and created a Samba dance with our own unique moves.

Today has been another beautiful day. We began the day celebrating the achievements of some incredible children within the school in our first of three half term achievers assemblies, followed by an extra-long playtime in the sunshine.  We had a great choice time this afternoon followed by ice pops in the sunshine to finish the day.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

A day trip to Beamish

10th June 2022Rachael Budden

What a wonderful first week back we have had. We had lots of celebrations for the Jubilee, a trip to Beamish, swimming, a trip to Charles Parsons and a workshop on steel pans!

On Monday, we celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee as a school. We started the morning by having a trail around school to find the Queens missing belongings, It was so much fun. We then had a party in the afternoon on the adventure playground with the whole school. We had lots of music, dancing, and cake, what a fantastic day we had!

On Tuesday, we started to design our very own posters for the Hadrian Carnival in July. Our topic this term is South America, so we have been learning all about Brazil and the fantastic carnival celebration they have. After watching some videos about the carnival, we got inspiration to plan our own posters to hang around school. We can’t wait for you all to see them.

On Wednesday, some of the children went to visit their new school, Sir Charles Parsons. We all had lots of fun meeting new friends and new teachers that we may see around school. We then continued working on our posters, they look amazing!

On Thursday, we were so lucky we got to go to Beamish thanks to The Rotary Club! We got to see what a 1940s school, houses and a farm looked like, it was so interesting! We even had a little ice-cream treat too!

Last week of half term!

27th May 2022Rachael Budden

We’ve had a lovely last week of half term. The children have been busy as always and we’ve had lots of fun activities. We began the week preparing for our Jubilee celebration on our first day back at school, making Union Jack flags and posters to decorate our party. Everyone is so excited!

In Maths this week, we have been recapping what a half is and how we can identify a half. On an outdoor lesson in the pergola, the children identified numbers and in groups correctly divided the number, splitting the objects into two hoops. In our next Maths lesson to consolidate this, the children were given a number of cubes to build a tower. They were then asked to split the tower in half and explain how we knew it was halved. Everyone showed great understanding and could correctly identify half of the tower and explain that the two halves must be equal in size.

On Tuesday we visited Sir Charles Parsons for our swimming lesson. The children all demonstrated such confidence in the water (and of course were rewarded with some free time at the end of the session). We returned to school just in time to join in with the Cèilidh dancing. What great fun!

In PSHE, we began to look at  pizza recipes, which we will be making for our Jubilee Celebration. From the recipe, everyone made their own shopping list with the ingredients we will need. A few of the children then took their shopping lists with them to Lidl to buy the ingredients. They all showed such maturity, walking sensibly to the shop, choosing their ingredients, checking dates and paying for the items themselves. We can’t wait to continue with shopping trips next half term. The rest of the class continued with Samba in their PE lessons, getting their moves ready for our Brazilian Carnival next term!

As our year 6’s get ready to transition to their new schools, we have begun working on our ‘Social Stories’ to help make the transition as smooth as possible. The children were thinking of how they feel about being at Hadrian School, how they feel about their upcoming move, the similarities and differences between the two and what can be done to make them feel happy and confident.

We spend our last day of half term in assembly celebrating the achievements of the wonderful children in this school. This afternoon we have our Friday Clubs, followed by a party for our birthday boy!

Hope everyone has a lovely holiday, see you all soon!

Hello Everyone!

13th May 2022Rachael Budden

As always we’ve had such a busy week. With the new term we have started new topics and even had a trip! In English this week, we started learning about the different features of a poster. We were so impressed with everyone’s contribution to our discussion. We continued the day with PSHE, were we read the book ‘The Smeds and the Smoods’ which conveys the message that although we may be different, we can still be friends. We completed a worksheet discussing the differences between the Smeds and the Smoods and touched upon how this subject relates to all of us.
This week in Maths, we have been learning all about halves. We demonstrated halving on fruit and asked the children to identify which pieces of fruit had been halved correctly. They were able to identify the halved fruit and explain how being cut down the middle ensured both sides of the fruit were equal. Following Maths, we enjoyed a free swimming at Sir Charles Parsons which is always a huge hit!
As our topic last term was space, we had a very exciting trip to the Centre For Life. We learnt so much from the exhibit, exploring the Space Zone and Planetarium. The children got to enter a reconstruction of the International Space Station, learning all about life as an astronaut. We launched rockets, presented weather forecasts and took control at the command centre. While at the Centre For Life, we also had time to visit the Brain Zone, were children were amazed by the illusions, saw a real human brain and even drank out of a toilet fountain.
Our current topic is all about South America and the Brazilian Carnival. In the carnival spirit, we joined Ellen’s class for a Samba lesson in PE. We learnt some traditional samba dance moves and even had the confidence to get in the middle of the dance circle to show them off!
Today, we had the second half of our Half Term Achievers assembly. As always it was lovely to see the achievements of our friends and come together as a school to celebrate them. Friday Clubs were a huge hit again, everyone is loving being able to interact with friends from across the school. We finished the day with half an hour choice time, a firm favourite in this class!
Hope you all have a lovely weekend!
