St Patrick’s Day Celebrations!

22nd March 2019Elaine Quinn

We started our week in celebratory style with a St Patrick’s Day assembly and an art session where we made beautiful glittery shamrocks.  We spent ages selecting our green materials and sticking them on.  We hope you liked them!

We have also been working hard in our Food Technology sessions where we made pitta bread pizzas.  We had to choose the equipment we needed and toppings to make a tasty treat.  Everyone is getting really good at using the tools to chop and grate. We did lots of sensory exploration and tasting.  The end results were delicious!

The weather was nice enough for us to go outside for our communication group, this week.  We have been working hard to say and sign stop, go, up, down, fast, slow, turn and push so we had lots of practise doing this in the playground!

We are visiting Washington Wildfowl Trust on Monday so please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing and footwear.

Thanks

Hannah

Giacometti Bread!

22nd March 2019Julia Kelly

We are learning all about a Swiss Sculptor called Alberto Giacometti. His sculptures are very distinctive from other sculptures and the children are learning to recognise Giacometti’s work. (Google him if you are interested in looking at his work) We are making our own Giacometti inspired sculptures using different medium. We made a sculpture using foil having explored different shapes with our bodies and drawn them “stick man style” This week we made figures using bread dough. We made two each, one to bake, paint and varnish and one to eat! In PE we worked with a partner and mirrored each others shapes. The children were so creative with their bodies and worked so well together.

I imagine Giacometti would have been delighted with the work his sculptures have inspired!

Let the sun shine!

20th March 2019Loveday Fisk

Let the sun shine!

With the sun shining, we’ve had a lovely first week back to school. Taking full advantage of the of the unusually warm weather we all made our way outside for outdoor learning, where we found all the things we could hear and see. On the way around all of the outdoor areas in school we found some rather cheery animals that started to sing! We all had a sing along, and even had a dance to the hokey cokey. After all of the singing we decided we were ready to explore and see what we could find. So we all got out of our chairs for a good look around. Ella found herself in a tree, Peniel found a boat, and Billy found a tyre! Good searching guys!

With it being the first week of term we decided we needed a way to get messy while giving ourselves some energy! So for messy play we had Weetabix and Milk. The power food! Peniel, Shay, Joseph and Jordan had lots of fun crunching and mushing the Weetabix into the milk, we even noticed the Weetabix absorbs the milk like a sponge so Peniel asked for more milk. With all of the fun going on for the boys the girls decided they’d have some time in the thrive room where they found a GIGANTIC TEDDY BEAR! Ella and Kimberly fell in love and gave the teddy lots of cuddles, so we will go back to visit him soon!

Billy and Peniel got a lovely pamper this week. Peniel had a relaxing foot spa while Billy had a fantastic haircut. Billy sat so well while having his hair cut, nice and relaxed with a Thomas the Tank Engine book. Well Done Billy!

WOW, what an amazing performance we watched this morning when Bare Toed came in to  school. They did acrobatic tricks and gave us a comedy performance with giant flies!!!         We were all mesmerized by their wonderful skills and talent.

Our Art Journey Continues

19th March 2019Julia Kelly

Last Friday our journey exploring the Arts continued and we found ourselves at the wonderful Baltic. The Baltic is an amazing place which always inspires awe and wonder at the interesting exhibits they have on display. We started at the top where we had a wonderful view of the Quayside.  The children could remember seeing the different sculptures on the Smart Board and were able to identify them. We came down a level and explored an interesting art installation by Heather Phillipson  named “The Age of Love” which was a series of videos, sounds and objects. A little tricky to understand the meaning behind it but it was a very inspiring place to be in if not a little crazy. We came down another level and explored the sensory space where we had the opportunity to get involved in s range of different activities.

It was a quick visit but we are hoping to work with the Baltic in the near future on a creative project.

World Book Day

15th March 2019Phil Cookson

Hello and welcome to our blog! Happy world book day everyone, we have all had a wonderful day today! This morning we have had a story read to us by our very own Emma in year 6 and it was brilliant. We have had lots of stories and we have really enjoyed playing as the characters we have dressed up as.

In the afternoon we had our world book day assembly which was amazing. Year 6 performed their take on ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ to celebrate its 30th anniversary. It was superb and they really put on a show. We then watched Nathan read his own take on the Hare and the Tortoise which was brilliant.

We then displayed lots of the work we carried out with robots, showing off the books we have read and showing everyone how they influenced us to carry out literacy, numeracy, DT, PE and music, where we performed our song ‘The Robot People’.

We have had a lovely day today and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Thanks for reading.

Phil, Mandy, Sharon and George.

Creative Dance with Christine

15th March 2019Julia Kelly

In PE we are learning about dance and how to express our bodies in the form of dance. Our teacher Christine has been reading a story about hibernation. We have been using our bodies to demonstrate the different stages of hibernation. We have been trying to mimic the animals by curling up and making our bodies small when it is time to hibernate and when it is time to wake up we have been making our bodies big by stretching and reaching up high.

We were also exploring the stages of a daffodil bulb growing. We started off by curling up and then got taller and grew leaves, our hands and arms, and then finally the flower blooming, stretching up as high as we could.

We look forward to working with Christine in the next few weeks.

Caring and sharing in Class 4/5B

15th March 2019Elaine Quinn

Happy Friday, everyone!  We have had a very productive week, working and playing hard!  We have been practising the signs that we need to talk about keeping ourselves clean, and the children now know the signs for clean, dirty, brush hair, brush teeth, wash, shower, bath and toilet.  The children have been learning how important it is to brush their teeth and wash their faces.  Everyone has got their own toothbrush and wash cloth at school!

In our class, we spend lots of time learning how to share and take turns, whether that is at snack time, when we play games or when we are sharing resources in task time.  In September it was really hard for us to share, but now we are really good at being kind to each other, and enjoy our Thrive sessions where we can learn to think about the feelings of others and the importance of sharing our toys and games.

We enjoyed Red Nose Day so much we hardly got any photos, but we enjoyed a Half Term Achiever Assembly this morning, and swimming AND a party this afternoon.

We have really missed our poorly friends this week and hope they get better over the weekend.  We hope Hurricane Hannah isn’t too disruptive!

We’re Back!

14th March 2019Jess Burns

Hi everyone,

We have had a great two weeks. We had a wonderful World Book Day, it was lovely to see all the different costumes and the children looked great! We started the day with a reading buddies session, Year 6 children came into class and read to the younger children. We then had an assembly and Sofia walked the catwalk dressed as the Hungry Caterpillar. Year 6 children then performed the Bear Hunt which is 30 years old!

We have been reading Jack and the Beanstalk! The children love the scary giant and climbing the beanstalk. We have used sensory aspects while reading the story and the children have been asking questions, exploring the resources and learning the names of the characters. The story has filtered into our fine motor/writing lessons, maths and even science! Next week, we are going to plant our very own bean stalk! The new ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ role play section of our classroom is beginning to take shape. They have made some leaves using collage for the beanstalk and we are currently creating a castle and interactive display board!

In maths we have been learning to count using dinosaur bones, digging through the soil and finding the numbered bones. The children are fab at counting and are now moving on to recognising the numerals. We have also been working hard on learning our numbers through Numicon. The children have been ordering Numicon, finding hidden Numicon in water and finding the correct amount of underwater creatures. They love playing in the water and different sensory materials.

In music we have been exploring long and short sounds. The children loved exploring the EYFS outdoor musical instruments and banging on the big drum!

We also had a great Pancake Day! We made big fluffy pancakes, they were so tasty we didn’t even have time to take photographs. The children were pouring, mixing then flipping them into the air. We even had pancake names, the children are great at recognising their own names and the children in their class. We had a fab assembly, where we watched everyone compete to see who could flip the pancake the highest and catch it! The children loved cheering on their peers and the adults!

I will see you all at parents evening. I am going to do a separate blog from the soft play trip.

Thank you,

Jess, Michele, Sharon, Kairen and Katherine.
