Hi everyone. Just to let you know we are thinking of you and reminding you that there are lots of ways to keep in touch. We have our Class Blog, The Hadrian Website which has so many ideas to help you and keep the children busy in these difficult times. We have the Class Dojo which we know up to now 7 parents have signed up to. Thank You. If you’re struggling to sign up just let Mrs Ball/Babs know and we can help. Of course we can still talk via the phone and we hope you are making links with each other.

What a busy and interesting week we have had. Unfortunately we couldn’t go on our trip on Monday but that didn’t stop us from having a brilliant week.
On Monday we completed planting up our window boxes with Pansies. Each child has planted up their own box. They are looking very lovely. In Art we continued working on pieces relating to our Romans Project. Can you believe we made Roman sandals (although we decided not to wear them when we had our big battle on Thursday!) We also did our names in very big letters and used Roman style mosaics to decorate them.
We set up our shops again in class and continued to explore money in a very practical way. We are getting very good at recognising different coins and their values. We also utilised the Stagecoach Bus to buy tickets and go on journeys.
We had a wonderful morning yesterday morning when we went to Hodgkin Park with two other classes. Our children did so well with their walking, particularly coming back as it was all uphill! We also had a brilliant Roman battle yesterday afternoon where we took our swords and shields outside and had a battle with the pesky Picts! The Romans did win we have to say but the Picts joined forces. Usman became Emperor and led his Army all around the school. He kept the most brilliant order. Sorry we have no photographs but we were just too busy role playing (anyway someone very correctly said they didn’t think the Romans had I Pods!) We came back and had a Roman Feast.
And today we had a Weekly Assembly where each child got a certificate for all their good work this half Term. We also had a big party this afternoon with our favourite games and food.

On Monday, we all took a trip out to ‘Segedunum’ to find out more about our hot topic ‘Romans’. At first we watched a short video to find out about Hadrian’s Wall, a real roman wall! (Fun fact: Our school is named after Emperor Hadrian! Lillie was amazed!)
After that we got to go and explore the museum, it was great fun dressing like Romans, building our own Hadrian’s wall and reading all about life as a Roman. There were lots of interesting things to look at, old roman pots, roman money and even Roman shields and swords!
We then ventured outside to see what once was a Roman village! We loved walking around the Roman ruins and reading all the signs about what used to be there. After lunch we had a roman workshop, all about Hadrian’s Wall. We learnt all about how it was built and even try ourselves! The Romans used to have long lines of people and pass each individual brick to each other until it got to the wall, so we did the same thing to build our own! Our acting skills came into play during this activity, as we pretended to be VERY tired Romans with VERY heavy bricks. We had lots of laughs. To finish off we found out about how the Romans used to make baskets, weaving each individual piece of willow between sticks.
To end our day we all went up the observation tower and admired the roman ruins from a far, we each got a pencil and some paper and drew what we could see.

On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day. Our whole day was themed around books, with lots of different activities and fun.
In the morning half of us went over to Denton Burn Library where we got to meet real life librarians! We read lots of books, chatted with the librarians and were even able to explore the library and find out all the different kind of books they have. We each got a story book to take home too. We are so lucky, Thank you!
The other half of us had just as much fun in school, we all enjoyed a story by our old Hadrian Head Girl Emma, who came all the way from Charles Parsons to read us a story about a Little Monkey. After our story we went to the dance studio to have ‘Story time Yoga’. We moved our bodies to the story of the Gruffalo! Making our bodies slip and slide like a snake and big and loud like the Gruffalo. We all had a really good time.
In the afternoon we had our World Book Day Assembly. We watched live performances of ‘The tiger who came for tea’ and ‘The Night Owl’ just before performing our very own rendition of ‘Fussy Freda’ We were all fantastic and each shined brightly on stage. Someone who had even more limelight was Sofia, who came in dressed as Fussy Freda! We chose Sofia to walk down the catwalk during assembly with Louise, who was also dressed as Fussy Freda! Sofia was fantastic with lots of twists and twirls and her hands on her hips, what a fantastic model we chose to represent Class 4.
We continue to enjoy learning all about the Romans and this we week we went into battle. We marched our army out and with careful planning and great skill we defeated those pesky Picts! (people living north of Hadrian’s Wall in Roman times) We put our well designed swords and shields to good use in our battle.
Just a reminder that we are off to Segedunum, otherwise known as Wallsend, on Monday for the day to bring to life the work we have been doing. We are also off to Vindolanda the following Monday.
Year 4 Team.
We are a very physical bunch and are always on the move. This week we were lucky to have with us Christine, a dance teacher who worked with us before Christmas on a “Santa’s Workshop” dance theme. This half term we are going to be exploring “Animals” and how they wake from hibernation and how they grow and change. We explored a range of different movements this week and very quickly Christine realised what a talented group we are and so will be introducing more challenging moves and ideas next week.
Some children are also going to Jabadao every Thursday to develop their physical skills. It is a wonderful opportunity to explore a range of movements at our own pace and also to work with other children from different classes.
Year 4 Team.
We have had the most wonderful week working within a Valentine’s Theme and to make it even better, we had a special visitor on Friday. It was our lovely Jess and baby Isabelle. She came in and introduced us all to her and Ray’s gorgeous little girl. The children were so excited but managed to stay calm for Isabelle. They asked Jess some interesting questions all about the baby and then sang some lullabies including “Away in a Manger” We hope to see her again soon.

Today our class went on the minibus to St Bedes School. For a while we have been planning to meet up and work together and today we finally got to meet each other. We had a wonderful afternoon together. We worked in small groups where we got to know each other and drew pictures together. We played a few games of “Colour Corners” which was great fun. We then taught St Bedes children one of our favourite Hadrian School songs, “Sunshine”. It was lovely to see the children having a good go at signing and they picked up the words so quickly that we split all of the children into two groups and sang the song in two parts! We also sang “Shake a Friend’s Hand”
At the end of our time together we gave the children a caterpillar card with £50.00 inside which we raised last year at the Shed Tuck Shop. We are looking forward to their children coming to us soon and we are going to keep up the contact through photographs, drawings and letters.

We have loved learning all about the water cycle, and the experiments that have come with it.
We have experimented and made our own clouds, our own rain and even had an experiment so we could see evaporation! We each made our own rain clouds, with water and cotton wool, we were all fascinated to see how many drops of water it would take before the water dripped through. The cloud needed to be heavy with water before it fell through, just like in the sky!
The discovering didn’t stop there! We used ice, water and hairspray to make our own clouds! First, we filled a jar full of hot water (With a little help from the adults!) then as quick as we could we sprayed hair spray into the jar before covering it over with a bowl full of ice. We then watched our rain clouds get thicker!
As we are learning all about the water cycle, we have learnt lots of new words like evaporation, condensation and precipitation! We are getting pretty good at remembering these words thanks to our friend Jack Hartmann who has given us two fantastic songs to sing along too on YouTube, to help us remember. With all of these new words it was interesting to see our very own water cycle in a bag, which we did for our last experiment. We used a zip lock bag, drew on a picture of the water cycle and filled it with water then stuck it onto the window. We then kept checking back through the week and were amazed to see some of the water had made it up to the top of the bag…and even disappeared! It had evaporated!
