Fun in the Sun

25th June 2021Loveday Fisk

Happy Friday friends.

Here is a snap shot of some of the things we have been up to in class this week.

Taking advantage of the gorgeous weather this week, we have enjoyed lots of time outdoors.  Here are some photos of our play session in the internal quad…

We love water play in our class.  This week we set up a water extravaganza in the secret garden.  We had paddling pools, bubbles, water sprays and lots of pouring resources.  The secret garden is a perfect location for water play as it is enclosed and shaded from the wind.  Here are some pictures of our water fun…

Have a great weekend everyone.  Stay safe.

Wet and wild week in class

18th June 2021Loveday Fisk

Happy Friday friends.

Here is a snap shot of some of the things we have been up to in class this week.

On Thursday we split the class group into 2.  Some of us enjoyed an afternoon outdoor water play and some enjoyed exploration and parachute play.  This worked so well.  Our exploration encouraged lots of communication, lots of peer interaction and lots of fun.  Here are some photo’s of our outdoor sessions this week.

During Sensory Art this half term we are exploring paint.  We will use a range of techniques to encourage all children to explore using their hands.  This week we began with balls and string.  Our first paint session was spent making special cards for a special day this weekend.  No spoilers.  Cards will be sent home today!! Hope all of our Dad’s and special people in our lives have a lovely day on Sunday. Here are some pics of the process.

Congratulations to our Jacob for being our class half term achiever.  Jacob was chosen this half term for his progress in all areas of learning.  He is now able to read 19 sight words.  He is using his big voice in class lots more and also improving his physical skills.  Jacob walks further than ever…….now walking to the school bus and back without a buggy.  He loves to move like different animals during Jabadao and Rebound Therapy.   He crawls and climbs with much greater strength and determination.  During this morning’s assembly, Jacob was presented with his certificate.  Mr Rollings was clearly as proud of Jacob after watching his journey as we are.    All half term achiever videos will be on the school website……………………… Watch out for Jacob’s to be uploaded soon.  Well done Jacob.

Midsummer Night’s Dream of a Friday

11th June 2021Loveday Fisk

We are down to the last half term of this academic year.  How did that happen?  Lots of fun activities planned.  We have our year 6 activity week in the throws of planning at the minute.  Lets make our last few weeks together special.

Shakespeare in schools has been a project our school has been involved in for a few years now.  Usually our children perform among other schools on the Northern Stage.  So much hard work and preparation goes on behind the scenes to allow each child to shine in our performance.  This year had to be different, for obvious reasons. Covid got in the way of the ‘usual’ format.  Nobody knew how this years would look or if would even happen.  The decision was taken to produce a Shakepeare performance in film format.  Today we invited some special guests to join our school in seeing the final edition.  Well…..there was not a dry eye in the school.  Our children performed a range of Shakespeare stories called ‘Shakespeare Hindsight 2020’.  It was the most moving performance to date. Every single class in school allowed each of their children to shine.  I can not express how wonderful it was for us all to watch from the safety of our bubbles.  We look forward to sharing with you all on the school website and social media very soon.  Unfortunately we can not share any photographs from today as we do not want to spoil the surprise.

This week we enjoyed lots of Outdoor Play.  Here are some photo’s of our children having fun in the sun.

This half term’s exploration is based around light.  Following last half terms ropes and string exploration, we decided based on the likes of the children we should explore light.  Using torches, disco lights, switches and lots more children  used their hands, communicated preferences and consolidated relationships with peers and adults in class.  Here are some photos of our session.

We hope you all have a fabulous weekend.  Stay safe

Eid Mubarak

14th May 2021Loveday Fisk

Eid Mubarak to all of our friends, in particular Yahya and Leen.  I hope you have enjoyed your celebration with friends and family.

Our year 6 children in class are beginning their transition to secondary school now in preparation for September.  We can’t believe Conlan, Fatima and Jacob leave Hadrian this year.  We visited Sir Charles Parson’s this morning and were greeted by Karen, Deputy Head.  She showed us around the Sensory Garden and the outdoor play spaces.  We were also able to meet some of the classes working in the music room and the art room.  We did this from a safe distance from the outdoors, standing at a safe distance.  It was lovely to see so many faces we recognised from Hadrian in years gone by. We took a stroll around the pond and heard about the fox that lives nearby.  All of our children loved the outdoor mud kitchen too.

Karen kindly took us a safe route to the Hydropool, rebound therapy class and lunch space before enjoying a play on the swings and the tower.  Here are some photo’s from our visit.

Happy Friday friends.

Here is a snap shot of some of the things we have been up to in class this week.

Every Tuesday afternoon we all gather for our Sensory Story session.  We try to change the story every half term, depending on engagement levels of children in class.  This half term our story is called ‘We’re going to the Farm’.  Every week we visit the farm, using all of our senses to experience a rural adventure.  We listen to different sounds, guessing what animals we will meet next.  Lots of  children are already showing a preference to the farm pig.  When we meet the pig we have a feel of thick oozey mud.  (also known as gloop with cocoa powder).  We also enjoy meeting Alfie, our school dog, who has a starring role at the end of the story.  Children can choose to give him a stroke or a treat.  We are seeing high levels engagement consistently during sensory story time.

Our additional class space which we call our Playspace is an area we use to support just that……PLAY.  Play is an ESSENTIAL part of children’s learning and development.  We have a role play, small world, messy, construction and movement area.  We have recently introduced a problem solving area to the room.  This is a place where children develop their problem solving skills using a range of containers and a motivating object.  We pop the motivating object in a container in which children must figure out how to lift, turn pull, open or push to retrieve the object their desire.  We use zippy bags, transparent and non transparent containers, bottles, cups and screw top containers. Have a look at our problem solving this week…..

Letters are going out this week about Summer club 2021.  Places usually go quickly.  Watch this space…….

Sensory Art, Exploration and Rebound fun

30th April 2021Loveday Fisk

Happy Friday everyone.  We hope you’ve all had a fabulous week.  We have been very busy.  At the end of every half term, we reflect on what has worked well in class and what we can change.  This helps us plan an engaging and exciting curriculum for the half term ahead.  This half term was no exception. We chose a new sensory art topic and a new exploration session based on interests and skills of our class.

The general aims of Sensory Art are to show engagement, use our hands, explore a range of materials, notice effect of change, cause and effect and making choices.  This half term we are exploring sculpture.   Using wire and beads we are beginning to make our own class sculpture.  We have been using our hands to pull, scrunch, squash, move and thread.  Here are some pictures of our journey this week.

Our new exploration session is based around the theme ropes and string.  This is an open ended session with lots of  possibilities for learning.  Children are introduced to an exciting environment, filled with play possibilities.  The session is completely child led, adult’s role is to follow their child’s interests and scaffold their learning in a way which is individual to that child.  For example, some children show an immediate interest in the ropes.  They show their interest by walking and picking up/looking at the rope.  An adult’s role is then to explore what they enjoy doing with the rope.  It could be pulling, wrapping, tickling, swinging etc.  The interaction between adult and child becomes key to all kinds of communication opportunities.  Here are some of the photos of this week’s exploration.

We have also worked very hard in rebound therapy this week.  We use music and specific resources to work on a range of movement and skills: from crawling to sitting, standing to balancing. Here is a taste of our rebound programme.

On the subject of rebound therapy, our rebound therapy centre is open again to the public at weekends and after school on a Tuesday and Thursday night.  Slots are being booked up quickly.  Give school a call to book a session.

Welcome back

26th April 2021Loveday Fisk

Belated welcome back to school. Apologies for the lack of blog last week.  Tech problems prevented our usual Friday edition.  We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Easter break.  We were lucky to enjoy lots of sunshine.  Long may it continue.  This holiday felt different as lots of places began to reopen.  The world is beginning to return to our new normal.  We’d like to take this opportunity to reassure you all, as the world outside reopens, we are continuing to follow procedures to keep Covid out of Hadrian.  We continue our high level of hygiene practice and continue to work in our bubbles.  We are still taking every precaution to keep ourselves safe in school.

As the sun shines, we are taking lots of opportunities to develop our outdoor learning curriculum.  In our class this means lots of outdoor exploration.  Last week we were able to enjoy some water play.  We are sometimes asked if all we do is play at school.  That’s a great question which we’d like to try to answer simply.

YES…..WE LOVE PLAY!!! Play is essential to develop a range of learning skills.  It’s how we are making sense of our world around us.  By using our bodies to explore water we are using our senses, our gross and fine motor skills.  We are filling and emptying containers, pouring water from one place to another.  We are developing mathematical  skills through problem solving.   We are also developing social play skills and enjoying activities alongside friends.  We are also creating strong relationships with adults through co exploration and creating opportunities for interactions with everyone around us.

The best way to promote communication is creating a nurturing environment rich in play.  We are using every opportunity to develop communication for each child using play.

Here are some photo’s of our Outdoor Learning last week……

We also enjoyed working in Jabadao on our physical and movement skills.  In this session we create an environment to encourage movement.  We use slides, body boards, climbing equipment. We changed our session this term after reflecting on last term.  We decided to choose equipment based on a specific movement or skill each week.    We chose climbing and balancing as our first trial. It worked beautifully.  The new session allowed our learning to be much more specific, allowing each child to flourish, at their own level, developing a particular skill. Here are some photos of how we got on…

1,2,3, back, 2,3…… and it’s Easter

1st April 2021Loveday Fisk

How are we already at Easter? The spring term has been a tricky one as Covid 19 stays with us all.  Yet we can all begin to see the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel.  Reflecting on this term I can honestly say our children have coped with so many changes in school.  People now wearing masks in the corridors, no whole school indoor events, no mixing bubbles etc. We have all worked hard to make these changes as stress free as possible and I can safely say, in our class, we have coped commendably.  Getting together to experience celebrations is such a huge part of what we do best at Hadrian, which is why this week was so special in school.  We all enjoyed an outdoor Ceilidh on Wednesday afternoon.  It was wonderful.  Every bubble remained socially distant to keep everyone safe, yet we all managed to be together in a shared outdoor space to enjoy some music and dancing.  We are lucky enough to have the best school staff live band.  Phil on piano, John on bass, Coralie on violin, Afra on accordion and Tracy on guitar.  Mr Rollings led the dances as our star caller.  We Walzed and Gay Gordon’d the afternoon away followed by an outdoor picnic There are pictures on our Friends Of Hadrian Facebook page of the whole school.  Here are some pictures of our class…

We hope you all have a wonderful Easter.  The Easter bunny has been to school already to treat our wonderful children.  Take care and stay safe.  See you all in 2 week’s time, ready for Summer term to begin.
