Weekly update

13th May 2022Elaine Quinn

This week we have resumed back to normal routine after a hectic couple of weeks with Shakespeare.

On Monday we kickstarted the week with some Samba dancing. We all loved it so much and we made up our own dance routines, while some of our friends played the drums to the music.

On Tuesday we continued our work with identifying the features of a poster. We had a look at some posters in depth and talked about what the event is, where it is held, how much it costs and when it is. Some of our friends have also started to create their own sensory board relating to Rio Carnivals.

In Maths this week we have continued with our counting skills and recognising and consolidating the concept of different numbers. We have built up our skills in different ways, one of them being Hook and Duck. This was so much fun and it required us to use perseverance and fine motor skills as well as our number recognition skills.

In our science this week we have been learning all about what plants need to grow. We then went outside and we had to identify and match different plants, this got us really thinking about the different features of them. We then made some more fairy circles inspired by the Artist Andy Goldsworthy.

On Thursday afternoon we joined together with Year 6 and we all showed off our Samba dance moves and and drumming skills. We absolutely loved joining Year 6 to all dance together and this is something we will be doing on a weekly basis.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and stay safe.

The suns finally coming out !

25th March 2022Elaine Quinn

This week we have continued our amazing writing on our biographies about Bob the Space Man. We have also done some lovely phonic sessions based around segmenting, blending and writing. These weekly phonics sessions have really paid off and have shown in our writing.

This week we also had our national Marie Curie Reflection day. We went over to our Caterpillar garden and we had a look at all the lovely work that we had all done last week. We reflected upon the good memories we shared together and had a lovely plan in the Sun.

We also continued our work on our Fairy Gardens again this week and we watered our plants from last week and we painted some lovely stones. We then used the stones and sticks to create fairy fences and paths and made our little garden look even more magical

We hope you have a lovely weekend and stay safe.

Hi everyone,

In our EYFS class we have been embracing the sunshine! We have had an afternoon exploring water, hot and cold, catching bubbles, dancing to music and splashing each other.

Hope you are all enjoying the sunshine!

Another busy week!

17th March 2022Elaine Quinn

This week, we have continued our work on biographies and have been writing some amazing facts about Bob, the Man on the Moon. We have really been working on our letter formation and segmenting cvc words in our writing. As you can tell by our work, we have become such amazing writers.

This half term we have been focusing on Bench ball. This is a game that requires a lot of skills such as team work, communication, listening,  throwing and catching. Due to this matter, this week we really focused on our throwing accuracy skills. We took it in turns to throw balls at the opposing team which we really enjoyed. This was extremely beneficial for building our confidence up, as some of us weren’t sure about having a soft ball thrown at our legs.

As it is coming up to April, our Shakespeare rehearsals have kickstarted again. This week Maria, Perry lee, Muhammad Raza and Muhammad have been practicing their roles in the performance. We cannot wait to see what more is to come.

In Maths this half term we are focusing on measurement. This is something we have all been superb at in the classroom. We are able to compare and describe the lengths of different objects and measure them using cubes or a ruler. As we have been amazing at measuring inside the classroom, we decided to take a trip outside to take our skills even further. We found different objects from outside that were on our list and we had to first estimate whether or not they would be bigger or smaller than 5 cubes or 10 cm. Once putting out estimation skills to the test, we then were able measure the objects and write down the measurements.

Last week, we spent the day in the yurt and we made some lovely fairy circles and hammered our fairy houses down to some tree stumps. This week we have decided to make our fairy garden look even more beautiful and we have done some amazing planting. This was rather tricky as the ground was very solid and had lots of weeds in it, however we showed a lot of resilience with our digging skills and we managed to get all our plants into the ground. We cannot wait to see them grow and show you all how beautiful our fairy garden is.

That’s all from us this week, we hope you have a lovely weekend and stay safe.

Back in the swing of things

11th March 2022Elaine Quinn

After a crazy busy world book week, we have resumed back to usual routine and started the week off learning about biography’s. We learnt what a biography is and we were all able to sort out texts into different piles. The following day we listened to the story of The Man on the Moon. We then jotted down some key facts about Bob the astronaut in preparation of creating our own biography’s.

On Tuesday we finally got back out to Sir Charles Parsons for our weekly swimming sessions. We had so much fun and we practiced our kicking skills. This was a great opportunity to splash all our teachers.

This half term in Maths we have moved onto measurements. This is something we have picked up really well and we are well and truly showing off our skills. We can compare and describe different objects and we can also use rulers to measure different objects!

On Thursday the sun decided to make an appearance, which was very fortunate as we spent the day out in the Yurt. In the morning we collected natural materials and made some lovely fairy circles in the flow field. In the afternoon we then collected more natural materials and used them to dress our fairy’s’. After that some of us nailed our fairy houses that we made last week to different tree stumps. This was a very tricky job, but we persevered and got the job done.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and stay safe !

Christmas is coming……

3rd December 2021Loveday Fisk

This week we began our Hadrian School countdown to Christmas in style this week.

Monday and Tuesday we began the week with our annual class Christmas trip.  Due to adverse weather over the weekend, we decided to stay nearer school and visit Jesmond Dene.  We had a lovely 2 days out. Children played in the park and enjoyed a walk before having a packed lunch on the warm bus.  We returned to school in the afternoon just in time for snack.

Children came into class on Wednesday December 1st to a magical array of Christmas lights.  Our school hall, reception area and classroom looked very festive.  School always looks magical at this time of year.  We spent the first part of the morning in our Advent assembly introducing the Christmas story of baby Jesus being born.  Children from each class added characters to our nativity scene to build a picture of the manger in Bethlehem.  We lit the first advent candle, which signified ‘hope’.  It was a very moving assembly, in which we sang and signed carols.  We shared a small taste of this on our Friends of Hadrian Facebook page.  Here is the link…….

Huge thanks to our friends from Greggs the bakers for their kind donations to school. We are thankful for the continuous generosity for our children all year around.

We also began making baubles to send home to decorate our trees in sensory art.  We had so much fun with the jewels, glitter and sticky back plastic.  I am sure this explains many glittery children going home!  We do change clothes to avoid too much mess but it does seem to sneak everywhere!  Apologies. I am sure the children’s handmade crafts will be worth it, I am sure!

Well done to our Basheer for being our class half term achiever.  Our lovely little boy has made lots of progress in his time with us.  His consistent communication and independence around school has astounded us.  Well done Bash.  Your family must be so proud, as we are!

This week we have enjoyed a session in the school Yurt.  Our lovely children have been superstars. Lots of intensive interaction between children and staff, beautiful eye contact and lots of choice making during a massage session.  The chilled music and log burning stove made the atmosphere very calm and allowed children an effective environment in which to flourish.

We had lots of giggles when adults tickled children.  Lots of opportunities for children to ask for more.

We ended the session with a lovely sing along.  Our children are music fanatics.  Lovely way to end a Friday.  Here are some pictures of our special time together.

We have had a fab week in class outdoors enjoying the autumn sunshine.  Lots of opportunities to play, connect and communicate.  Here are some photos of our fun filled days!

We ended the week with a bang.  Lots of fireworks to celebbrate Bonfire night.  We hope to see lots of you at our display tonight.

Have a safe weekend.

Bangladesh Harvest in the Yurt

8th October 2021Jess Burns

Hi everyone,

We had an amazing day in the yurt! As you know the weather wasn’t great (we were drenched to the core) but it was wonderful listening to the rain bounce off the roof of the yurt with the log burner lit. The children were fascinated by the fire.

We practiced our chopping skills and made a vegetable curry with nan breads on the stove.

Alfie came to visit and we shared our custard creams.

We practiced our dancing with scarves to Bangladeshi music.

We then tasted the curry before it was entered into the Harvest Around the World Competition.

The yurt is such an amazing aspect to our already great outdoor spaces.

Thank you,

Jess, Lindsay, Corrie and Michele.

Outdoors, waterplay and rebound….

24th September 2021Loveday Fisk

Already we can see potential friendships blossoming. Happy Friday friends.  We have had a very busy third week!  Staff and children have merged as a team, beautifully.

As a school we have a wonderful outdoor learning curriculum, filled with exciting opportunities to learn using the wealth of outdoor spaces we have to access.  Our class learn outdoors everyday, come rain or shine.  We have waterproof clothing and footwear for every child in class, to allow children to learn outdoors despite the unpredictable British weather.
This week has been no different.  Here are some photos of our children using the internal quad to work on their PLP (personal learning plan) outcomes.

Lots of our children are very motivated by water play.  These are golden opportunities to support great communication.  This week we worked on communication targets using the water play environment to encourage children to make requests.  Here are some photos of our fun times learning using water….

Our class follow a very physical, therapeutic and sensory curriculum.  Rebound Therapy is a weekly session which our class LOVE.  We follow a structure every week to encourage a range of movements from each child.  We use music as a cue to follow a routine in which we balance, crawl, walk, climb and stand using the trampoline as a base to challenge each child.  Lots of children need these sessions to expend some energy while others use the movement of the bed to enjoy deeper stretches and more stimulating position work.  We are very lucky to have our own bespoke Rebound Therapy Centre.

Already we can see potential friendships blossoming…..

Have a wonderful weekend.  We look forward to another fun filled week next week.
