Weekly News

11th October 2019Phil Cookson

What have class 3/4 been up to this week?

We have had another busy week in school. The children have all worked extremely hard and have shown the grownups what super stars they are. Unfortunately some of the children and staff have been poorly this week; we wish them all a speedy recovery and hope to see them fit and well back in school on Monday.

In English we continue with our story Stick Man. The children have been using their drama skills to act out various parts of the story and even made some music to go with the emotions of stick man throughout the story. We have made sad, happy and angry music using lots of different instruments to create the right atmospheric music for each emotion.

In maths we continue to build on our knowledge of numbers and counting through participation of board games. Some children have also been learning about and using the language big and small.

In Art the children have made some lovely Christmas cards this week… yes CHRISTMAS cards!! We know it’s early but we needed to get them in for the school council competition. Fingers crossed some of our wonderful cards get picked.

We also put together a video for our deputy head Marian Stokle, as she turns 60 on her birthday. We wish her the most wonderful time celebrating such a special birthday this weekend.

We hope you all have a fantastic weekend and see you back on Monday.

Harvest Festival

4th October 2019Phil Cookson

This week we have been busy making bread for the Harvest Festival ‘Bake Off’ assembly on Wednesday. The children enjoyed mixing all the ingredients together and using their cookery skills to knead the dough. We decided to make a yummy cheesy garlic bread to accompany our very own Baltic Flour Mill. The children were excellent at spreading the toppings on to the bread and building the Baltic. They also chose which toppings they wanted on their own garlic breads, fabulous work from all of class 3/4. We called our class creation ‘a night on the town’. It was a tough competition this year with lots of excellent entries; unfortunately we did not win the bake off but we did enjoy eating our creation for snack. We would like to congratulate Coralie’s class who gained the winning tea towel! We would also like to thank everyone for their harvest donations which will be passed on to Newcastle West End Foodbank. This is greatly appreciated.

We have also been busy this week in Science continuing with learning about hard and soft as well as rough and smooth. Some children went on an adventure around school to see what they could find with these properties, whilst others got messy making and exploring play dough.

The class also enjoyed a trip to Lidl yesterday morning to collect some yummy treats for snack, before we set off the children made their very own shopping lists which we used to find and buy the snacks.

Excellent work by everyone again this week. Another week of being super proud of every single one of our children and what they have achieved! Enjoy a lovely weekend.

Fun outdoors

1st October 2019Phil Cookson

Another busy week in class 3/4. The children have enjoyed getting messy and using their exploration skills in a range of activities, indoors and outdoors!

In Science we have started learning about hard and soft. What better way to explore materials than to make slime? The class had great fun watching the textures of the materials change and mixing the ingredients together. Once the slime was made we had lots of fun exploring and making different shapes with the slime.

In Numeracy we went on a treasure hunt around school, the children needed to use their counting skills to find the next clues; this led us to find some yummy treats for everyone to share at the end of the hunt. In literacy we have continued with the story Stick Man and we been practising some fantastic mark making and retelling parts of the story.

It has been great weather to get wrapped up in our waterproofs and head outdoors to explore lots of puddles and the mud kitchen. The children enjoyed using their imagination and getting extremely wet and messy. Expect your children to have a lot more of this over the coming weeks.

Trip to Newcastle Quayside.

1st October 2019Phil Cookson

Continuing with our topic ‘landmarks in and around where we live’, we managed to get out of school for another trip last Tuesday. This time we headed out for a morning down to the Quayside. There are so many fantastic landmarks around the Quayside to look at and enjoy!

We started our adventure at the Sage and stopped off for a drink and snack inside before we walked down lots and lots and lots of steps to make our way to the Millennium Bridge. We had a lovely walk across the bridge and were able to look right along the river to see all of the buildings and bridges crossing the River Tyne. We then made our way to the Baltic and went straight to the top floor in the lift to have a look at the stunning views. The children were very brave as they looked out of the window from so high up and were able to spot the Millennium Bridge, the Sage and the Tyne Bridge.

Class 3/4 had a fantastic time out of school and were excellently behaved.

Busy week in class 3/4

20th September 2019Phil Cookson

This week we have really been working hard across the curriculum and getting back in to the swing of things. The children have particularly enjoyed and worked well in PE, Cookery and Phonics.

We have enjoyed getting physical this week and getting our bodies moving and stretching in PE and Cosmic Yoga. We have also been working on our fine motor skills through the use of mark making, shaving foam and using magnets. In cookery we made some scrumptious jam tarts which the class enjoyed for snack, they used lots of skills to make them including rolling, cutting and filling. In Phonics the class enjoyed working on their sound discrimination skills and going outdoors with beaters to make their own sounds. In literacy we have continued with our story Stick Man and in Numeracy we have been building on our knowledge of numbers and counting as well as learning about big and small.

On Tuesday we had our first class trip out and went to the Angel of the North. It was such a successful trip we are heading out again next Tuesday to the Quayside!

Another fantastic week in class 3/4. We are all looking forward to another busy week starting Monday.

Angel of the North

20th September 2019Phil Cookson

This week we have started our topic work for the term, we are learning about landmarks where we live. So where better to head to than the Angel of the North?

The children had a fabulous afternoon on Tuesday experiencing the giant steel sculpture. They enjoyed climbing on the feet of the angel and sliding back down. The weather was beautiful and the children embraced the big grass hill by doing roly-poly’s from the top to the bottom. Some children even made their own angel’s by using their shadows. A great afternoon was had by the whole class.

Our next trip will be on the morning of Tuesday 24th September. We are heading to the Quayside in Newcastle to look at some more landmarks

Up and Away

13th September 2019Phil Cookson

Welcome to class 3/4.

What a fantastic start to the school year. The children in class 3/4 have settled into their new class so quickly and are really beginning to show us how brilliant they are. We have had a lovely first couple of weeks getting to know the children and introducing the staff that will be working with them for the year ahead. The children are starting to get used to our routines in class and have responded fantastically to incredibly busy school days.

We have a new friend in class called Muhammad. Muhammad is new to Hadrian school and is starting to find his way around the school and making lots of new friends. We wish Muhammad a happy and fun time in his journey through Hadrian school.

We have started some literacy and numeracy work this week. In literacy we have introduced the children to the story Stick Man by Julia Donaldson which led us on to making our very own stickmen in Art. We collected sticks from the adventure playground and used them to make stick men with our own faces. In Numeracy we have been busy learning about big and small and working on our counting skills. The children engaged really well in the various activities including building towers, exploring big and small shapes and knocking down skittles.

In cookery we made pizzas and sandwiches. Choosing their own toppings and fillings the children really got stuck in to using different skills to choose, spread and chop the ingredients to make their perfect pizza and sandwich. They then enjoyed eating what they had made for their snack.

The children participated in cosmic yoga yesterday and showed us just how flexible they are with the different positions they could make with their bodies.

We have also had time to fit in a litter pick around school this week to help keep our school nice and tidy! The children were absolutely fantastic as they took their litter pickers and went around the grounds picking up lots of litter. They really are fantastic at helping to keep our school clean and tidy.

We are looking forward to a fun, happy and busy year ahead with the children in class.

Wishing everyone a lovely, happy and restful weekend in preparation for another fun filled week.

Escape to the Country!

3rd May 2019Phil Cookson

We just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who attended our play all about World War 2 on Wednesday! We all had lots of fun bringing our curriculum to life and displaying our learning through the medium of drama and music. The children deserve all the credit as they have worked very hard and shown great levels of patience during practices! Well done to all involved and all the staff as it would have been impossible without their hard work and commitment.

Have a lovely weekend.

Dig For Victory

20th March 2019Phil Cookson

Hello and welcome to our blog!

Today we have been having lots of fun down at the Ouseburn Farm. We have been learning about what life was like for children during World War II when they got evacuated to the country. We got some first-hand experience of life on the farm.

We started by looking at some of the animals and feeding some giant cows! This was lots of fun as the cows just didn’t stop eating as they were very hungry! We then had to carry out the job of looking after the sheep so they could go to the field. We made a human fence to stop them from escaping to the Cluny and then ushered them off into the field where we fed them.

After all the excitement of the sheep we needed to go and tend to the chickens who we named Burger, Nugget, Fillet, Goujon and Drumstick.

After all the commotion of the chickens we visited the pigs to feed them some of their pig food. We had to be extra careful when feeding the pigs because their food actually looks like a finger, so we had to throw the food in for them.

Now that all the animals were fed and tended to we needed to learn about growing food in the classroom. We planted a seed into some newspaper and brought them back to school to watch them grow.

We have had a lovely day and we have learnt lots of interesting things.

Thanks for reading.

Phil
