Hello Everyone!

13th May 2022Rachael Budden

As always we’ve had such a busy week. With the new term we have started new topics and even had a trip! In English this week, we started learning about the different features of a poster. We were so impressed with everyone’s contribution to our discussion. We continued the day with PSHE, were we read the book ‘The Smeds and the Smoods’ which conveys the message that although we may be different, we can still be friends. We completed a worksheet discussing the differences between the Smeds and the Smoods and touched upon how this subject relates to all of us.
This week in Maths, we have been learning all about halves. We demonstrated halving on fruit and asked the children to identify which pieces of fruit had been halved correctly. They were able to identify the halved fruit and explain how being cut down the middle ensured both sides of the fruit were equal. Following Maths, we enjoyed a free swimming at Sir Charles Parsons which is always a huge hit!
As our topic last term was space, we had a very exciting trip to the Centre For Life. We learnt so much from the exhibit, exploring the Space Zone and Planetarium. The children got to enter a reconstruction of the International Space Station, learning all about life as an astronaut. We launched rockets, presented weather forecasts and took control at the command centre. While at the Centre For Life, we also had time to visit the Brain Zone, were children were amazed by the illusions, saw a real human brain and even drank out of a toilet fountain.
Our current topic is all about South America and the Brazilian Carnival. In the carnival spirit, we joined Ellen’s class for a Samba lesson in PE. We learnt some traditional samba dance moves and even had the confidence to get in the middle of the dance circle to show them off!
Today, we had the second half of our Half Term Achievers assembly. As always it was lovely to see the achievements of our friends and come together as a school to celebrate them. Friday Clubs were a huge hit again, everyone is loving being able to interact with friends from across the school. We finished the day with half an hour choice time, a firm favourite in this class!
Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Hello Everyone!

6th May 2022Rachael Budden

Although it was only a four day week after the bank holiday, this week has been incredibly busy yet again! Following on from our King Lear performance, we chose Shakespeare as our focus for this year’s Art Award. The children worked hard researching facts about Shakespeare’s life and what inspired him to become a writer and performer.

This week was our first coffee afternoon since the beginning of covid! It was lovely to welcome some of the children’s families into our school, giving them a chance to see all of the amazing work the children have achieved over the past year.

On Wednesday, the school held a special memorial assembly in honour of Pat Collins. We learnt all about her life and the amazing work she did, not only for our school, but for many schools within her career. Our pupils sang songs (one was even an original song written themselves!) and said prays in her honour.

Thursday was our final performance of King Lear. This time, we were able to perform for the full school and parents who were unable to attend on the night. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room! The children blew away everyone’s expectations and we just want to say once more how incredibly proud of each and every child that took part. As horse riding on the afternoon was cancelled, the children all enjoyed a trip to Tyne Riverside Country Park which was a real treat.

Today we had our half term achievers to celebrate the children who blew us away this term. How amazing it is to see the children’s progression and achievements on the big screen. Finally, this afternoon marked the return of Friday clubs! Our children all chose the clubs they wanted to attend (story book, cookery, disco, drama and sport to name a few) and had the best time interacting with children from across the full school and having fun. It’s lovely we’re finally able to meet with our friends from different classes again.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

What a busy week!

29th April 2022Rachael Budden

The first week back after Easter has been so busy for all of the children, however we’ve been incredibly proud of the behaviour and attitudes demonstrated by them all throughout all the change this week.

A huge part of our timetable has been preparation for our performance of Shakespeare’s King Lear. This included our first dress rehearsal and a visit to Northern Stage where the performance is taking place for a run through. The show has come a long way from the first few sessions earlier in the year and we cannot wait for everyone to see! All the performers have put so much time and effort into the performance and we are so incredibly proud of them all.

On Wednesday, the children that are attending Sir Charles Parsons School in September had their first transitions visit to the school. They had a tour around the school (including the playground with a zip wire!) and even got to see some of our old friends. Although some children were nervous about the visit and upcoming change, everyone had a great time and were incredibly excited by the end of the visit.

Thursday was a brilliant day for everyone in the class. We were lucky enough to attend Nuns Moor Fair to enjoy the rides before opening. We were amazed at how brave everybody was, with many choosing to go on the biggest rides (sometimes twice!). We definitely have some thrill seekers in the class. We enjoyed having our packed lunches at the fair and even received a bag of candy floss each. We would like to say a huge thanks to the fair and everyone involved in organising the visit! We finished off the day celebrating Oliver’s 9th birthday. Happy birthday Oliver, we hope you’ve had the best day.

In anticipation for our performance this evening, everyone involved in the play have travelled to the Northern Stage for a final rehearsal. We can’t wait to share with you all the performance and I hope family and friends who are attending have the best time and enjoy the show. Good luck to all our performers, you will do amazing. Break a leg!

Happy Easter to all!!!

8th April 2022Rachael Budden

It has been a very busy term with lots of activities and rehearsals for King Lear. The children have worked very hard over the term doing their regular lessons and having lots of fun.

However this week we could only concentrate on the rehearsals and the Easter activities. The children made Easter cards, and their very own baskets and learnt about the Easter story. They also had an Easter egg hunt where they worked together in teams and helped their friends find an egg each. We also had to design our own fairy house. The children gathered all the resources needed to put their fairy house together.

Today in assembly we had to say farewell to some of our staff, the children were very emotional and made cards for the staff to wish them well. The exciting part of the day was Lillie’s birthday. We had a party in the afternoon and ate some delicious chocolate cake.

Hope you all have a lovely Easter and a relaxing Half Term!!!

Easter excitement!!!

1st April 2022Rachael Budden

It has been a very busy week for our children as they have been working really hard practising for Shakespeare again. We have now practised all the scenes and it looks amazing. We are so proud of our children for their perfection in taking direction and working with their friends. They are now able to remember when they have to step in for their parts. They are getting more and more confident performing in front of an audience too. In English this week we did another biography on the “Man on the Moon”. Most of them liked the story and were able to recall the facts and put it together in their English Books. On Thursday we had to work hard transferring all our stuff back into our own class. The children are happy to be back in their class.

It’s soon going to be Easter and we have been making some lovely cards for our families. Shirley’s Class bought their little chicks for our children to play and hold them. They all had an exciting time with the chicks.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Yet another week of excitement and hard work!!

25th March 2022Rachael Budden

All through this week we have been practising and focussing on our roles in the Shakespeare performance of King Lear. It has been a pleasure watching our budding actors listen to the direction of the adult and work in teams as well as in their individual character roles. In English we are learning about and writing biographies. This week our biography was on Mirabel from Encanto. It has been hard for the children not having their own classroom, although they have made their best attempt at settling in. They are excited and looking forward to going back into their own classroom next week. Our topic in maths is progressing too. The children are learning to estimate and then measure objects using different non-standard and standard units.

This week we celebrated national reflection day and our children visited the caterpillar garden where they appreciated the lovely work the whole school had displayed. They sang songs and had fun in the sun. They have been really creative too and made some lovely Mother’s Day cards for you all.

Have a lovely weekend.

Hello Everyone!

18th March 2022Rachael Budden

As always, we’ve had a great week in Rachael’s class! Late last week began our temporary move to our new classroom, so this week has been a settling in period. We’ve been so impressed with everyone’s attitude towards the move. We’re making the new classroom feel like home until we can be back to our own classroom.

We’ve started a new topic in Maths and have begun to develop our measuring skills. We have been using a nonstandard measurement (cubes) to measure everyday objects, guessing whether the objects will be more or less than 5 cubes.

In English, we have been focusing on Shakespeare. With our performance of ‘King Lear’ fast approaching, we have been meeting for sessions to develop our acting skills. Now roles have been given, we have been practicing the scenes and we’re ready to bring the stories to life in our performance!

In swimming this week, we were blown away by the confidence the children were showing in the water. Children who were previously nervous just stepping into the pool are now submerging their heads and retrieving objects from the bottom of the pool. We can’t wait to see the progression from here.

On Thursday, we celebrated St Patrick’s Day. Unfortunately, we were unable to have our usual St Patricks Assembly. However, we made sure to have a discussion around the holiday and had some St Patrick’s Day themed activities and colouring.

Finally, we finished the week with Red Nose Day! The children all looked great dressed in red or as superheroes and we raised some money for a great cause.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

What a lovely week!

11th March 2022Rachael Budden

What a great week everyone has had. Along with our usual lessons, there’s been lots of fun sessions and even a trip. We began the week working on our Shakespeare performance. We were learning the basics of acting and played games to sharpen our acting skills. Over the coming weeks, we still start rehearsing and getting into character.

On Tuesday we were finally back to Charles Parsons for our swimming session! Although we love a spontaneous trip to our hydro pool,  we all benefit so much from the extra space to practice our skills in the water (and of course the floaties at the end of the session).

We were back to practicing Shakespeare on Wednesday, everyone is so excited to be performance ready and show you all! We were also lucky enough to be in the Yurt. We brought the outside in for our Maths lessons, collecting outside objects and measuring them in cubes.

Thursday marked our first trip out as a class. We attended Riverside Ten Pin Bowling for a tournament against 7 other schools. Everyone tried really hard and we managed to take third place! We all got medals and even a framed certificate to displace in the sports centre. It was so lovely to see the children thriving in a new environment and the behaviour from each and every one of them made us all really proud.

Friday is always great in our class. After a great assembly the children loved playing on the adventure playground. We had football after lunch which is always a great hit and finally finished the day with choice time.

We hope everyone has a great weekend!

World Book Week!

4th March 2022Rachael Budden

What an exciting week we have had celebrating world book day! Our theme this year was ‘Peter Pan’, with the yurt being transformed into Wendy’s bedroom and the sensory room becoming a Peter Pan Fairy Grotto. We linked World Book Day into each subject throughout the week and the children loved the creative spin on each lesson.

On Monday we had a sensory story based around the story of ‘Peter Pan’ where each of the children had the chance to act out parts of the story, such as walking the plank. It was great to see everyone getting into character!

We had a break from World Book Day on Tuesday as we had another celebration, Shrove Tuesday! During our assembly, we learned about Shrove Tuesday and why it is celebrated (including why we eat pancakes). Our very own Head Boy and Head Girl, Usman and Lillie, helped make pancakes for the full school to taste. We had some strange toppings (Nutella, jam, sugar and lemon juice anyone?) but they went down a treat!

On Wednesday we were transported to Wendy’s bedroom in the yurt. We reread the story of Peter Pan and put our acting skills to the test, performing the scene where Peter Pan invites Wendy to leave the nursery and come to Neverland with him. We finished off our time in the yurt with ‘Willy Wonka’s Hot Chocolate) which warmed everyone up and went down a treat. Our English lesson tested the children on how well they remembered the story, with the children sequencing the story and retelling the scene in their own sentences. Everyone must have been paying attention because they all did amazing and were really creative in their summarising sentences. We finished off the day celebrating Kaitlin’s 11th birthday!

The main event, World Book Day, took place on Thursday. Everyone looked fantastic and we had some really creative costumes. We began our day with a virtual zoom meeting with author/illustrator Simon Bartram. We took us through his book ‘Man on the Moon’ and a masterclass on drawing his very cheeky aliens. In food technology we followed the recipe for ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’s Tiger Buns’. We must have some budding bakers as they turned out delicious and everyone enjoyed them for their snack. After lunch we had a Dance Rox session with Jo, where each dance was book themed. Finally we had our World Book Day assembly where we watched ‘The Masked Story Teller’ and showed off some of our amazing costumes on the catwalk.

We finished our week with a school assembly were our new friend Oliver received a certificate for all the work he’s did to build relationships with both the staff and children. We finished out day with wet play and choice time.

We hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

A super busy and exciting week!!

18th February 2022Rachael Budden

This week we started off with celebrating Valentine’s Day. All of us made cards for each other and had a little party. We danced to some lovely music, played games, and shared all our feelings about the Special day.

We also worked very hard in Maths trying to read time to the nearest hour and half past and some of them to the nearest quarter. In Science we looked at the features of the Moon and did an activity to see how craters are formed on the surface of the moon. The children enjoyed role playing Neil Armstrong, the first Astronaut to land on the Moon. In English we wrote some facts on Valentine’s Day and did good reading too. In PE we worked in teams and played a game of football.

Today was a special assembly to say farewell to Ann and Rob as it was their last day in school. We sang and danced to some of our favourite songs and watched some lovely performance from some of the children in the other classes. It was an emotional farewell and some of our children were in tears to say bye to Rob. This afternoon the children have enjoyed their choice time and are looking forward to the half term break.

Hope you all have a lovely break.
