Our Trip to Craster

20th June 2019Julia Kelly

On Monday we were lucky to be invited up to Val and Reg’s beautiful  home in the village of Craster. We were met by Val and Reg who prepared a snack for us on arrival. We then all went to the local park with the most wonderful views over the Northumbrian coast. The children clearly enjoyed the physical challenge that the park provided. We also had a quick visit to the Art Gallery where there was different types of art on display including paintings by a local artist, jewellery, pottery and glass pieces.

We then went back to Val and Reg’s house for lunch. We had brought our own packed lunches but Val also provided delicious pizzas. The children really tucked in with some children saying it was the best part of the day!

After lunch we went out again to visit the harbour. We were lucky to catch a fishing boat coming in with crabs and lobsters on board. A friendly fisherman got one of each out for us to look at. We noticed the lobsters had bands on their pincers to prevent nasty nips! We then walked a little way along the coastal path towards Dunstanburgh Castle.

What a wonderful day. It was so peaceful we could have stayed so much longer. We even joked we could have all stayed over night!  Many thanks to Val and Reg for sharing their home with us.

A week in the life of Class 1a

14th June 2019Jess Burns

Hi everyone,

I hope you have had a great week. We have been very busy, they have worked very hard on their maths skills and we introduced one of our new stories The Enormous Turnip. This story links massively to our Science Topic Pushes and Pulls. They especially enjoyed pushing and pulling me around the room, copying the key signs for the characters names and key actions.

In maths, we have been learning all about patterns and size. The children were great at using the coloured squares, animals and fruit to make various patterns. We have been learning all about size and sorted lots of big and small objects.

We have introduced our new role play area, an Ice-cream Parlour and we all love it. We have been choosing our flavour ice-cream, paying for them, taking orders and eating them! They have great play skills and it’s amazing listening to them organising each other and discussing what they want to eat. On Monday, plans have changed because Wheelbirks is closed. However, we will be attending an ice-cream parlour. The coffee afternoon is still going ahead, I hope you can all attend.

Massive happy birthday to our Sophia! We had such a great party, dancing and playing games also lots of cake!

Well done to Sehrish who received a certificate and medal for her amazing use of her VOCA.

Have a wonderful weekend.

An Underwater Encounter…

14th June 2019Elaine Quinn

What a wonderful day we had at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth!  Everybody was fascinated by the different kinds of sea life that can be found all around the world.  We liked using the enormous underwater magnifying glasses to look more closely at the strange creatures.  We weren’t supposed to put our hands in the water in case the fish nibbled us, but some of us didn’t notice the signs!  Luckily the piranhas and sharks were kept in closed tanks! We saw the sea horse family, floating peacefully in the water and noticed a busy little guppy, digging in the gravel with its nose, collecting a mouthful of sand and then depositing it a bit further along the tank!

We loved seeing the seals in particular.  We stood in the Splash Zone and got soaked! Did you know that seals use their whiskers to detect things in the water?  We cheered Marv and Sophos as they raced around the tank, showing off their diving skills.

After a tasty packed lunch, we strolled along the prom to the park at Cullercoats. We spotted loads of enormous tankers and ferries sailing along the coast.  We were surprised to bump into Ellen’s class who were also on a trip!  We played happily with our friends until it was time to get back on the bus.  We had one last run up the coast, to spot St Mary’s Lighthouse and Spanish City before we went back to school.  The sea air had totally tired us out and so we had a nice quiet journey home.

Hadrian Hair shop

14th June 2019Elaine Quinn

Another busy fun day in the pop up salon !

We had 42 children visit us this session which has taken our donations over £500 from the beginning.  This has enabled us to buy some new resources for school.

We have some budding hairstylists, who loved using the Girls’ World hairdressing heads.

Pass it on Parents Coffee Morning

14th June 2019Elaine Quinn

Another busy, productive coffee morning with the fabulous Pass it on Parents providing help and support.

Pass It On Parents

Pass it on parents at Skills for People logo
We are parents of children with disability.  We help families with a disabled child to find and create mutual support. We do this through social media and by meeting up. We help families find all the information that they need in order to have the best possible family life as full members of their communities. We believe that parent to parent support is really important.  We are a wide network.  We want to support all parents of disabled children in Newcastle including those who have an individual or personal budget. We organise a range of coffee mornings, catch up, chats and informal meetings where parents can drop in and socialise, offer ro see advice and support from other parents.

We have some paid workers who support this parental voice group and help keep everyone informed, particularly using social media.

Thornley Woods

12th June 2019Julia Kelly

We had a great time yesterday at Thornley Woods. We were looking to see what animals we could find. We have been learning all about different habitats as part of our Science topic. We were also on the hunt for a perfect spot to build our own den. Once we found it we had to then scavenge for bracken, leaves and sticks. Everyone got stuck in and had fun searching for things to use. We even had a pretend fire and sang camp fire songs around it. Thank fully the rain stayed off and the ground was dry.

Everyone had so much fun!!

There’s a hole at the bottom of the sea!

11th June 2019Elaine Quinn

We were a little busy at the end of last week, so apologies for this late blog post!

We introduced our new story, ‘There’s a hole at the bottom of the sea,’ and everyone really enjoyed joining in with the repeated phrases.  We learned the signs for octopus, jellyfish, eel, snail, fish and dolphin and we plan to learn lots more underwater and seaside signs in the weeks to come.  We liked finding  out about food chains – the snail eats the weed, the squid eats the snail, the eel eats the squid and the shark eats the eel!

We started to set up our new role play area – we’re making a seaside scene, complete with a sandy beach and a rockpool.  Hannah brought in her blow up dinghy, but sadly it didn’t stay blown up for long!  We still had fun ‘floating’ around the Caterpillar Garden! We’ve been doing as much outdoor learning as possible when the sun has come out.  We enjoyed playing in the huge sandpit, filling up our buckets right to the top!

In class we have been practising ‘same’ and ‘different’ and using our flash cards to help us when we play pairs games.  Some of us have really good memories and can find pairs straight away.  Some of us still need some practice!

We had a fantastic time at Tynemouth Blue Reef Aquarium – watch out for our blog about it on Friday!

Seaside

10th June 2019Sharon Dodd

We’ve had great fun making a start on some messy play for our Seaside display, we have been painting with lots of different utensils and different shades of blues and greens to match the sea. We have also been busy decorating a giant box that we think might make a great boat to sail in. As well as all our messy play we have been digging and building sandcastles, looking at sea creatures and just having fun in the sun!

Rix Wiki

7th June 2019Elaine Quinn

What is a Wiki?

Wikis are simple, accessible, secure and easy to build. They can be used to create multimedia person-centred plans that use pictures, words, video and sound to capture the voice, skills, aspirations and needs of the individual.
Wikis give ownership of the planning process to individuals and families, facilitating genuine collaboration between parents, teachers and professionals, with access given to view the wiki only from the person who has the log in, and only that person can add or edit its content.

Wikis offer a method for children with complex needs to explain some of those complexities in their own way, to record their needs and just do it once. It can hold lots of information that could help anyone working with your child understand themselves and their needs.

I have added a link to show one families experience and how this has worked so well for them.

Skills for Life have secured funding to train parents and give a years free trial for the first 50 families interested.
