Creative Dance with Christine

15th March 2019Julia Kelly

In PE we are learning about dance and how to express our bodies in the form of dance. Our teacher Christine has been reading a story about hibernation. We have been using our bodies to demonstrate the different stages of hibernation. We have been trying to mimic the animals by curling up and making our bodies small when it is time to hibernate and when it is time to wake up we have been making our bodies big by stretching and reaching up high.

We were also exploring the stages of a daffodil bulb growing. We started off by curling up and then got taller and grew leaves, our hands and arms, and then finally the flower blooming, stretching up as high as we could.

We look forward to working with Christine in the next few weeks.

Caring and sharing in Class 4/5B

15th March 2019Elaine Quinn

Happy Friday, everyone!  We have had a very productive week, working and playing hard!  We have been practising the signs that we need to talk about keeping ourselves clean, and the children now know the signs for clean, dirty, brush hair, brush teeth, wash, shower, bath and toilet.  The children have been learning how important it is to brush their teeth and wash their faces.  Everyone has got their own toothbrush and wash cloth at school!

In our class, we spend lots of time learning how to share and take turns, whether that is at snack time, when we play games or when we are sharing resources in task time.  In September it was really hard for us to share, but now we are really good at being kind to each other, and enjoy our Thrive sessions where we can learn to think about the feelings of others and the importance of sharing our toys and games.

We enjoyed Red Nose Day so much we hardly got any photos, but we enjoyed a Half Term Achiever Assembly this morning, and swimming AND a party this afternoon.

We have really missed our poorly friends this week and hope they get better over the weekend.  We hope Hurricane Hannah isn’t too disruptive!

We’re Back!

14th March 2019Jess Burns

Hi everyone,

We have had a great two weeks. We had a wonderful World Book Day, it was lovely to see all the different costumes and the children looked great! We started the day with a reading buddies session, Year 6 children came into class and read to the younger children. We then had an assembly and Sofia walked the catwalk dressed as the Hungry Caterpillar. Year 6 children then performed the Bear Hunt which is 30 years old!

We have been reading Jack and the Beanstalk! The children love the scary giant and climbing the beanstalk. We have used sensory aspects while reading the story and the children have been asking questions, exploring the resources and learning the names of the characters. The story has filtered into our fine motor/writing lessons, maths and even science! Next week, we are going to plant our very own bean stalk! The new ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ role play section of our classroom is beginning to take shape. They have made some leaves using collage for the beanstalk and we are currently creating a castle and interactive display board!

In maths we have been learning to count using dinosaur bones, digging through the soil and finding the numbered bones. The children are fab at counting and are now moving on to recognising the numerals. We have also been working hard on learning our numbers through Numicon. The children have been ordering Numicon, finding hidden Numicon in water and finding the correct amount of underwater creatures. They love playing in the water and different sensory materials.

In music we have been exploring long and short sounds. The children loved exploring the EYFS outdoor musical instruments and banging on the big drum!

We also had a great Pancake Day! We made big fluffy pancakes, they were so tasty we didn’t even have time to take photographs. The children were pouring, mixing then flipping them into the air. We even had pancake names, the children are great at recognising their own names and the children in their class. We had a fab assembly, where we watched everyone compete to see who could flip the pancake the highest and catch it! The children loved cheering on their peers and the adults!

I will see you all at parents evening. I am going to do a separate blog from the soft play trip.

Thank you,

Jess, Michele, Sharon, Kairen and Katherine.

Our Amazing Sculptures

12th March 2019Julia Kelly

After working on our sculptures over several weeks they are finished! We have worked so hard at every stage from designing them, making them and then decorating them using copper, gold and silver paints and adding different interesting materials. We have displayed them in the corridor for everyone to see.

We are now finding out about a Swiss Sculptor called Alberto Giacometti who sculpted very interesting and distinctive figures. We are going to make our own models using a range of different mediums and will exhibit them in the Art Exhibition later in the year.

Another busy day in the pop up hair shop !

11th March 2019Elaine Quinn

We had another very busy day at the pop up hair shop !

We managed to see over 30 children for haircuts, manicures and pedicures. The children all love the atmosphere and being there with their friends,  The foot spas are a favourite!

We have raised £260 which we are using to buy some more equipment for the salon, dolls’ styling heads for the children to practise on themselves, also a sunshade for the Thrive outdoor area.

The next salon day is Thursday 28th March.

A very bookish week!

8th March 2019Elaine Quinn

It’s been a fun and busy week!

On Tuesday we celebrated Pancake Day and enjoyed Mrs Stokle’s assembly.  There was lots of spectacular pancake flipping and we enjoyed tasting the end results!

We really enjoyed World Book Day and everyone looked amazing in their outfits!  We had Horrid Henry, Little Red Riding Hood, Billionaire Boy, Elmer, Little Miss Muffet and a Troll!  It was a brilliant day – we listened to lots of stories, and had a fantastic assembly to celebrate our love of books.

In class we have been busy, as usual, painting, playing and generally working really hard.

This afternoon, we have been entertained with a performance of ‘The Selfish Giant’.  It was a great way to end our week!

World Book Day

8th March 2019Julia Kelly

We had such a brilliant time celebrating World Book Day yesterday. We were amazed and delighted with the range of costumes the children were dressed in. Thank you so much for taking the time to dress up your child. We prepared the room before the children arrived with a spooky theme for our story of the day “Winnie the Witch” There was subdued lighting and spooky music playing. The children were so excited when they arrived. We listened to a wonderful story told by our Head Girl, Emma and also explored “Winnie the Witch” and “Room on a Broom” (as Lydia was dressed wonderfully for the story) Throughout the morning We made magic potions, magic wands and also spooky black dough.

In the afternoon we went into the Sports Hall to watch a performance of “Going on a Bear Hunt” and also listened whilst Nathan told his special story “The Tortoise and the Hare” to the whole school!. Well Done Nathan. To finish off the day the children showed their costumes on the “Catwalk” Kate was our representative and show cased her costume to perfection.

What a brilliant day. Exhausting but well worth it.

Vindolanda

8th March 2019Julia Kelly

As part of our work on the Romans we were very excited to visit Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum. We set off on Tuesday morning via the military road which was like riding on a roller coaster (lots of ups and downs) and first visited the Roman Army Museum. We went into a Latin classroom with a holographic teacher who appeared from the past, after we rang the bell to get the lesson started. We then watched a 3D movie about Hadrian’s Wall and what life was like at the ‘Edge of the Empire’. It helped make the topic come to life and we felt like we were really there.  Nathan even gave the movie a 5 star rating!

We then got back on the bus and went to Vindolanda. Before we visited the fort we had our lunch in a Roman Dwelling, where we ‘ate like a Roman’. We then went around the museum and looked at all the treasures, hair brushes, jewellery and shoes. We even got to look at the ‘Vindolanda Writing Tablets’.

After the museum we walked up a VERY steep hill which brought us to the Roman Fort. Everyone had fun pretending to ‘live’ in the different buildings and climbing on the walls.

What a brilliant day we all had!

Cleaning up our act!

1st March 2019Elaine Quinn

It’s been another busy first week back after our lovely week off!  Hope you all had a nice, relaxing half term!

As you can see from the pictures, we have started to do some new work around personal hygiene routines.  It is important to become as independent as possible, so we are focusing on all the things we can do to help ourselves when we get ready in the morning.   We had a great session ‘taking a shower’ with a spray bottle, washing our hands with soap, drying our hair and brushing our hair.  We have turned our role play area into a bathroom with a dressing table.  We have had great fun styling our hair! Everyone is learning the signs that we need to talk about getting ready in the morning. If you would like a copy of the signs we use for bathroom routines, please let me know.

In our numeracy lessons we have been looking at shapes. We have been sorting by shape and discussing the features of circles, squares and triangles.  Some shapes have curved sides, and others have straight sides and sharp corners.

We have also been practising our pattern making and fine motor skills.  Look at the beautiful necklaces that the girls made, earlier this week!  Beautiful!

We have taken advantage of the warm weather and spent lots of time out and about in our school grounds.  We are starting some work on rubbish and recycling, so we picked up some litter in the school grounds to tidy the place up.  We are also watching some peelings left over from our food tech lesson, to see what happens to them over time.  They are already starting to look a bit yucky!

Have a great weekend!

Hannah and Team
