Balloons and static electricity!

1st February 2019Julia Kelly

We are learning all about electricity in science. As you know, we went to the Discovery Museum last week which the children absolutely loved and where they found out so much . This week we explored electricity and safety where we learnt how to keep ourselves safe.

We also watched some experiments which explored static electricity. The children were amazed at how objects could move as if by magic. We decided to try for ourselves with a balloon and tissue paper. We rubbed the balloons on our heads and as if by magic our balloons picked up the tissue paper. We also explored different surfaces around the classroom to see if our balloons would stick to them.

We were all scientists with very static hair!

Have a good weekend,

Busy Bees!

31st January 2019Loveday Fisk

So we’ve had a hectic couple of weeks back in Class 5/6, falling back into our daily routines and busy schedules.

To start our first week back from the holidays we had a new sensory story, the Magic Bus! We all moved our chairs into rows, strapped on our seat belts and set off.  On our visit we found ourselves at the beach, the Antarctic and even got ourselves stuck in the jungle! We also had a visit from a wolf, a dinosaur, ostrich and sheep on the way! Fear not, as life like as they were it was just Simon and Leon in disguise!

Our new topic for exploration and investigation is ‘Light’. We filled the room with lots of different lights and activities.  Using the lights we made some fantastic shadow shapes, explored UV light and found out new ways to use the lights to have lots of fun!

Although we’ve loved getting stuck into our new activities, getting back to our normal fun has been great too. Our topic this term for messy play has been ‘water’.  Take a look at our class in action!

This term we also said a huge happy birthday to Ella! Who is now in the double digits squad, at 10 years old! Happy Birthday Ella!

A week of celebrations in 4/5b

25th January 2019Elaine Quinn

What a week of celebrations!  We’ve celebrated three birthdays this week.  Ava and Amelia and our big girl, Susan have all had parties, and we’ve had a lovely time eating cake and playing games.

Cake!

Blowing out candles.

SO MANY CANDLES!

Getting ready for a party!

Happy birthday!

We hope all our birthday girls have a lovely weekend, celebrating with family and friends.

After recovering from the parties, we did some investigations into things that are hard and soft.  We felt different materials and learned the signs.

We have enjoyed lots of Thrive activities this week, and ended on a high note, with a lovely hydrotherapy session!

Enjoy your weekend!

Our Visit to the Discovery Museum

25th January 2019Julia Kelly

We are learning all about electricity in our science lessons this term. We decided we would visit the Discovery Museum as we knew there was a science maze where we could explore different activities including finding out about electricity.

What a fabulous time we had. All of the children were so interested and keen to find out more. The staff were very impressed with the questions they were asking. Such a credit to Hadrian School. Next week we will be looking at what uses electricity in the home and also all about electricity and safety.

We hope you have a great weekend.

Mental Health Awareness and Staff Wellbeing

25th January 2019Nadia Motie

Staff at Hadrian School have been working hard on their wellbeing! We have enjoyed two whole school wellbeing afternoons which involved some mindful colouring in, meditation, table tennis, card games and a whole school sing a long!

We also had a very successful secret pen-pal project before Christmas. All staff picked a name out of a hat and that person became their secret pen-pal. We then had to do something nice for that person before the Christmas holidays! People were receiving surprise gifts, bunches of flowers, motivational notes and tasty treats! It was a fantastic way to raise spirits and contribute to staff wellbeing at the end of a very long term!

We have some great ideas in the pipeline for upcoming events, a staff trip to York, a pizza night, weekly bonus ball and a summer picnic on the beach! Watch this space!

Metrocentre fun!

25th January 2019Clare Downey

Thank you to all of you kind parents and carers for your generous donations for our class trip this week.  We had such a fantastic day.  Children were an absolute credit to you all!  We began our trip all aboard the school mini bus. This is a great adventure for all children. We drove to the Metrocentre and parked in the coach park. This means we all got the chance to spot the trains over the pedestrian bridge before we even got there. Our first stop in the shopping centre was the Build a Bear store. We made our very own friend for class. Our 1B Monkey was named Melvin. We all had fun taking turns to press the special button to fill him up. We then took Melvin to the soft play area to allow everyone the chance to get out of chairs to play! Every single child enjoyed exploring the new surroundings.

After soft play, children were getting peckish. We enjoyed a treat at McDonalds. I could see how much everyone enjoyed the food. James bought his very own Muffin Milkshake from the Muffin shop to enjoy with his friends. After McDonalds we ventured on to the train. This experience, for lots of our children was a new one and one which some children had previously been upset by. Well, our entire class surpassed our wildest dreams. Every single child smiled and took in the whole experience. We were so delighted by their responses.  I know parents and carers will be super proud!

We loved our day out. It was fun filled!  Look out for our new class friend coming home with your child soon. One child per week will be chosen to take Melvin for the weekend. We look forward to sharing your weekend news with your friends in class.

Enjoy our photo’s.

I love my muffin milkshake!

The last time i rode the train i wasn’t happy…

look at how much I am enjoying the train now.

Choo choo Basheer

I am taking in everything around me!

I am sitting down enjoying the train with very little adult support!

I loved clapping on the train!

I feel so brave! First train ride…….watch out Mummy, I can’t wait to share this experience with you!!

I can drink during lunch with greater independence!

I loved pressing the button to stuff our class monkey!

I am so excited by the sound this machine makes when I press the button!

I loved drying the fur off our new class monkey.

I loved exploring with our new friend

I LOVE soft play

Tickles and giggles

McDonalds treat for everyone, thanks to my kind Mummy and Daddy!

Visit to the BALTIC

25th January 2019Rachael Budden

We were lucky enough to visit the BALTIC this week and had a great time!  Our favourite exhibit was definitely The Age of Love by Heather Phillipson – a series of sounds, videos and objects with blue flashing lights.  We had a great dance to the music and really enjoyed watching the videos (especially the cat!).  We also loved A Retrospective by Rasheed Araeen – the children’s opinions on both exhibits were great! 6B would definitely recommend that you visit the BALTIC to see them!

The Angel of the North

24th January 2019Julia Kelly

This half term in art we are working on Sculptures. We looked at different sculptures around our school and also on the Smart Board. We were particularly interested in The Angel of the North. We used clay to make our own models and then decided we would like to visit the real Angel of the North on the school mini bus.

As we travelled to it the bend in the A1 made it look as if the Angel was moving from right to the left side of the road. We were fascinated and thought it was flying around! It was mighty cold up on the hill but we loved seeing the Angel and were amazed at how big it was. We all did a wonderful sketch of it and we will be making our own models using different materials.

Another busy productive week in 4/5b

18th January 2019Elaine Quinn

We have had a really busy week, doing lots of learning and thinking.  This half term, we are using the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ to learn about:

  • Big things and small things in our numeracy work
  • Soft and hard in our investigation work
  • Different tastes and textures in food technology

We enjoyed making bear shaped sandwiches in our food technology lesson.  We tasted and chose different fillings for our sandwiches before practising our spreading skills and cutting them into bear shapes.  Of course, real bears eat honey sandwiches, or marmalade, if it’s Paddington!

We were all taken by surprise when it started to snow when we were playing in the quad!  It was loads of fun to make tracks in the snow and feel how cold it was.  We had to come in and warm up with some soft blankets!

Have a great weekend and stay cosy!
