We are going to the Farm!

28th February 2024Fran Kennedy

This term our topic is ‘The Farm’.  We have shown great engagement throughout. We have loved learning all about our new topic through lots of different activities such as exploration, messy play, sensory stories and art. We have learned all about the different animals that live on a farm, the noises they make, what grows on a farm and who works there.

We can’t wait to visit the farm next week and experience a tractor ride and feed the animals. Check back for more photos!

Our little Dino Explorers!

26th October 2023Fran Kennedy

What a busy Autumn 1 it has been! We welcomed Rohan and Olivia to our class 🙂

We have hit the ground running with our topic theme dinosaurs. We are enjoying our weekly sensory story called ‘we are going on a Dino hunt.’ The children are engaging well with the music and the story props.

On Monday afternoons, we have exploring food and its textures as part of our food aversion session. To begin we used a piece of bread to develop tolerance tp the smell and touch to our face and eventually to our lips. We then began to add to our bread beginning with jam and then cheese slices. This has proved a great success as some of the children are now eating new foods that they previously didn’t. Next half term we are going to focus on wet puddings such as custard and continue to food chain with different textures.

As part of our PFL sessions on a Wednesday morning, we are focusing on tolerating getting our height measured, feet measured and using the scales to be weighed. We have explored the texture of a hairdressing apron.

We have had a great half term with Timbadash. This has been such an exciting journey working with the fabulous Timbadash team. Every child showed great engagement over each session. Check out our amazing photos from over the half term.

In PE we have been exploring different ways to move. We explored climbing apparatus, climbing stairs, jumping, rolling, crawling and sliding. This supports our self-regulation which is so important to us.

We had a wonderful visit to Great North Museum. The children loved exploring in the museum and especially liked looking at the huge T-Rex.  We explored ‘Dino dig’ session ran by the museum staff. The children really enjoyed their day out.

We finished of the the half term with a Halloween themed week. We loved exploring all the sensory items on offer. We made edible witches hat, potions, explored pumpkin playdough and painting pumpkins using puffy paint.  What a great end to the half term.

Our Half term achievers were Jenson and Rohan, we are so proud of them and all of their achievements.

End of an Early Years Era….

19th July 2023Fran Kennedy

As part of our topic of ‘Natural things’, we visited Dobbies Garden Centre. We explored the sights and sounds around us. We played in the soft play and had lots of fun together. What a great visit had by all!

We also visited Morrisons where we explored the seasonal aisle of gardening. We enjoyed looking at garden toys. We also visited the café to make choices of what we would like to eat or drink.

Natural things

We have been learning about Natural things as part of our Summer term Early Years topic. We had a great opportunity to watch and grow our very own caterpillars. We received them in the post just after we got back from the Easter holidays and then we watched as our caterpillars ate their food, grew and grew and grew and then they formed into their chrysalis. We then waited very patiently and watched as the first beautiful butterfly emerged, followed closely by the rest. We were all so excited and couldn’t believe our eyes. After a couple of weeks, we were ready to let our 5 butterflies free into the wild to find their new homes.

Every Thursday we visit the caravan which is in the caterpillar garden. We are enjoying exploring the environment, having a snack as well as learning to make ourselves a drink and some toast. This is vital in supporting our preparation for life.

The end of an Early Years Era…

The last day of Reception,

look how much we have grown.

We have learnt so much and can’t believe

how fast this year has flown!

Now look at my picture,

and just think for a while.

Look how much I have progressed this year,

I bet this made you smile!

Have you all have a restful Summer break. As always, Thank you so much for all your support over the last year. We cannot put into words how proud we all are of your children.  We know that they will continue to shine bright next year.

Love Fran, Lauren, Michelle & Yasmin xxx

All things bright and beautiful…

25th May 2023Fran Kennedy

We have had a blast this half term and over the past 6 weeks we have never stopped with the various different arts and crafts and exploration. We have blinked and we are at the May half term – can you believe it! This half term our topic has been focusing around natural things and we have spent time exploring all of the natural things that our world has to offer.

We explored all of the different flora and fauna in the different areas around school and collected our favorite bits that we then used to print our fabulous pictures with.

We talked all about ‘Earth day’ and painted our fabulous stones using paints and various mark making tools.

We also printed using fruit and vegetables exploring how they feel and some of us also explored the taste.

We made and created our very own caterpillars and butterflies using stamps and different textures. We really enjoyed this and loved the different colours and the way the different textures felt on our hands.

We have had the most wonderful time exploring the trim trail and the caterpillar garden and the past couple of weeks we have had the chance to explore our caravan that we have had revamped. We took lots of snacks up last week and enjoyed the lovely weather and our snacks whilst relaxing in the caravan and exploring the various different equipment the areas have to offer.

As well as all of this we have enjoyed our Rebound and Hydro therapy sessions and we are really building up our confidence in both.

As well as all of this we had the opportunity to watch and grow our very own caterpillars. We received them in the post just after we got back from the Easter holidays and then we watched as our caterpillars ate their food, grew and grew and grew and then they formed into their chrysalis. We then waited very patiently and last week we watched as the first beautiful butterfly emerged, followed closely by the rest. We were all so excited and couldn’t believe our eyes. We then went up to our decked area and let all 5 of them free and into the wild to find their new homes. We all laughed and shouted excitedly as they fluttered away.

As well as all of this we have also had two trips one to the garden centre and one yesterday where we had a lovely walk in the sun up to Morrisons where we had some tea and cake. The children coped so well with he difference in routine and some even got to go up to the till, order and pay for their items.

We hope you all enjoy a fabulous break and we look forward to seeing you all back at school on Monday 5th June.

Northumberland Zoo

17th March 2023Fran Kennedy

A very unusual week here in class 5, but we had lots of fun on our class trip to Northumberland Zoo. The children were all impeccably behaved and were an asset to our school. Although it was very cold we were wrapped up all cosy and enjoyed looking at all of the fabulous wildlife the zoo had to offer. The children were able to see birds of prey, fruit bats, lemurs, insects, a raven, donkeys, cows, a horse, snow leopards and lots more. The zoo really is host to a wide range of different species.

The children also had the chance to go into the gift shop and choose a gift of their liking from the money provided by home. We couldn’t wait to show our parents and carers what we had bought and we hope all of the change found its way back to you including a free pass for your child to enter the zoo.

A whole new world

3rd March 2023Fran Kennedy

Welcome back we hope you all had a lovely half term break. We have loved reading your journals to find out what you all got up to over the holiday and it sounds like you’ve all had the best time with your friends and families.

We have had a fabulous first week back at school and yesterday we enjoyed a fabulous world book day. We started the morning off with a fabulous Zumba to stories such as Room on a Broom and The Gruffalo, acting out the various shapes of the characters getting our bodies working and moving! We then had a trip around our fabulous book trail which some of our staff have kindly put up around school. We are very much looking forward to being able to sit out in the sun and read our fabulous books when the weather gets slightly warmer. We also enjoyed some fabulous Aladdin themed arts and crafts, creating our very own fly carpet and magic lanterns.

Yesterday afternoon we all came together as a school to celebrate World Book day having stories told to us by ‘The Masked Storyteller’, we all shouted “get it off” once we had guessed who we thought the storyteller might be. We all loved getting involved in this and we were all out of our seats having lots of fun. We then had a cat walk down the aisle to show off all our fabulous outfits and I’m sure you will all agree Class 5 had THE best outfits of the day!

As well as all this excitement we have of course carried on with our usual therapies and timetabled lessons.

Dates to remember

Wednesday 8th March – is our Holi festival please can all the children either bring a white t-shirt or wear a one for school. We strongly advise you to dress your child in old clothes and shoes (one’s you don’t mind getting covered in powder paint)

Understanding the World

10th February 2023Fran Kennedy

This week we have gone totally bonkers over Asia sampling a wide variety of cultures and objects of reference from various different countries within Asia.

We began the week by making our very own Asian fans by painting various vibrant colour’s and sticking on wonderful gold paper, we loved looking at the light reflecting off the gold paper while we were sticking it onto our fans. We then used our skills to fold the paper into fabulous fans which we moved up and down to create air on our faces.

We then looked at the map of Asia, pointing out and exploring the green land and the blue sea. We then used various materials and tools to stick on and create our very own map of Asia.

After all that cutting, sticking and making we explored some of the food and various textures of Asia. Feeling lentils, chickpeas and rice and saying whether we like the feel or not. As you can see we all loved the various textures and we especially loved banging on our sensory mood table and watching the rice dance across the surface.

We also explored the different sounds and smells of Asia and as you can tell by our faces some of them weren’t too our liking – but we all gave it a go and we are so proud of all our children and how well they will accept new smells, textures, tastes and experiences within school.

As well as all of this we have had our usual timetable and therapies have have enjoyed a fabulous swim this morning.

Just a reminder that school breaks up for half term on Thursday 16th of February and we will return on Monday 27th of February.

Come fly with me.

3rd February 2023Fran Kennedy

We have had a busy few weeks here in Class 5.

We are still enjoying our mud kitchen sessions on a Monday morning and its a great way to start our week, blowing off the cobwebs. We love dancing under the hose pipe and we have had the opportunity to explore our music shack where we can make sounds, loud and quiet using the various instruments in there.

We have also been letting out all of our energy at the sensory suite sliding, swinging and balancing of the various pieces of equipment in there. We have also enjoyed and extra special P.E. session on a Monday afternoon building up our confidence and our strength, climbing, running, jumping, balancing and crawling through the various apparatus in the school hall.

We have also been very busy making our passports ready for our airport trip and on Tuesday we had the opportunity to go out on our school bus, ride the metro and explore the airport. We scanned our passports and had a cuppa while we waited for our flight! Every single one of our little legends handled the change in routine, the different environmental sounds and smells and the transitions with grace, it was a pleasure and a joy to take them all out. We also had a special treat and visited the wheatsheaf pub for our lunch where we all enjoyed a fabulous  dinner of pizza, chicken nuggets and chips and played in the little play area.

After all that busy work we have finished off the week with a relaxing hydro session.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you bight and early on Monday morning.

Welcome back.

13th January 2023Fran Kennedy

Hello and welcome back, we hope you all had a lovely and relaxing Christmas holiday. We have hit the ground running since being back at school and have carried on with building upon our relationships and gaining confidence whilst transitioning around our school.

On Monday we ventured out to our mud kitchen wrapped up all cosy with our water proofs on to have lots of fun making mud pies and filling and emptying out the watering cans, we then enjoyed a trip to our sensory integration room. Monday is such a busy day for us here in class 5 but our fabulous little legends never fail to surprise us with their versatility and resilience. We also enjoyed our fabulous sensory suite – we all really love it in here, especially the projector where we get to watch the fish swim underneath our feet. We finished off our day with body awareness and physical development, becoming aware of the position and movement of our body parts.

Tuesday we began our day with our new story in English which for this half term is Handa’s Surprise. We have begun by reading the first few pages of the book and we all enjoyed feeling, touching and smelling bananas, which is the first fruit she collects. We then headed for a much needed play in our soft play suite where we enjoyed the ball pool and the slides. After dinner we then headed to our Thrive room to enjoy the various toys and books in there, we especially love the doll’s house and kitchen and in here it allows us the opportunity to expand on our play skills. We then headed back to class where we enjoyed a session developing our fine motor skills, such as threading, posting and pegging and let me tell you we are all getting pretty good at this.

Of course Wednesday is one of our favorite days as we all enjoy a trip to our Rebound centre where we are working very hard on our various levels, of course there is always time for a little play on the trampolines. We then started on our topic of Asia and painted some of the many flags that make up Asia. We had lots of fun using the paints to create our flags. We then enjoyed some calm time and enjoyed some water play in class, using jugs and various different objects to fill up with water and empty out. This is a particular favorite of ours.

Yesterday we continued with or personal hygiene session. We enjoyed massage, nail filing, hair brushing and teeth brushes. We love to watch ourselves in the mirror while we are pampered and we are building up our tolerance level and are allowing the adults to be in our space so much more. We also enjoyed messy play exploring different textures and tastes.

Today we enjoyed our Hydro session, we just love splish splashing in the water and we are beginning to dip our heads underneath the surface, we are beginning to get used to the routines of the hydro pool, changing, showering and then entering safely. We then enjoyed our weekly assembly with Mr Rollings. We love singing and dancing to all of our Hadrian assembly songs. We have all become so settled and regulated in assembly and  we are so proud of how will the children manage with the various elements of our assembly.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend

That’s a wrap!

23rd December 2022Fran Kennedy

Just like that 8 weeks have passed us by and we are all ready to leave for the Christmas holidays. I really can’t believe just how fast these weeks have gone but we have had so much fun getting to know all your fabulous children. They have brought us so much joy over the last 8 weeks, they are all a credit to you. They have handled coming into a new school and meeting new faces with such ease, handling new experiences, transitions and areas they had never been to before. I know us as a team are just so overwhelmed by the progress all of your children have made in such little time. We are in awe of them – they are inspirational!

We kicked off this week with a visit from the Stagecoach Santa were we entered Santa’s grotto on the bus! We are so lucky to have so many fantastic services come to our school and we were so grateful for our selection boxes. We also enjoyed our Christmas party, playing pass the parcel and our old Hadrian favorite ‘corners’, the children had so much fun running around and soaking up the atmosphere. We danced and sang until our socks fell off and then we came back to class where we enjoyed our party food and we even had a visit from the man himself, no not Mr Rollings, SANTA. We were all so excited to see him and he gave us each a special gift for us to take home and enjoy.

On Tuesday we all enjoyed a fabulous festive feast prepared by our kitchen, it was so yummy. We then all went outside in our adventure playground to sing Christmas songs and have a big whole school party with our very own Hadrian School band playing their instruments and singing for all to hear.

We have also been finishing off our Christmas crafts and making sure they were all ready to go and hopefully by now you will have had them home. We really hope you enjoy all of the fabulous crafts we have been making, the children have worked so hard and it will always be something to look back on as the children get older.

Today we have had a quieter day and have enjoyed some choice time and some good old Christmas songs and this afternoon we have our annual Christmas nativity to enjoy to end the day nicely.

Monday 9th of January school reopens and our new topic is all about Asia, we have some very exciting sessions planned all around Asia and we can’t wait to get started.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year may it be filled with all the happiness in the world.
